As the Election draws near everyone seems to have something to say. This note is a homily from my deacon regarding the upcoming election, though more specifically, the requirement of Catholics to defend the sanctity of human life that is desecrated by the holocaust of the new millennium ( Read more... )

"If ABORTIONS CONTINUE…OUR COUNTRY WILL COLLAPSE!"

Clarify.

I'm sorry, I sound like a douchebag, but I really do not understand. Please help:

Is there a reason that a single cell zygote gets preference over the women of this nation? Why is the McCain campaign website silent on women's issues like rape, domestic violence, and contraception? Palin supported legislation that required women to pay for their own rape kits. That doesn't sound like a Christian walking the walk to me.

Is it really more important to refuse to support contraception for those who would rather not abort, or to protect a single cell object, than it is to minister to women who have been ravaged by individuals and society as a whole?

I personally think this is going too far.

I found this sermon very upsetting. Mainly because I don't think it even qualifies as a sermon. It's a lecture.

On a completely separate topic from abortion, politics and all that...
What do you think makes a sermon what it is? What is a sermon in your mind? I'm just really interested to find out. I'm not saying a sermon = lecture all the time, but sermons generally have lecture type qualities, in that they are instructional.

To explain, I wasn't using the word lecture like lecture in a classroom, but lecture as is what you do to a small child that spills the sugar. That's what it feels like to me. Not that I'm in any way equating abortion with kids being naughty.

I am not catholic and have been continually confused about catholic belief on this topic. Could you please explain the theological argument that supports this stance that "life" begins at conception?

I'm not trying to be a dick, but I would like to know the roots of this issue.

Thank you for your attempt, but you didn't answer the question. I didn't ask from a scientific point of view. I asked for the THEOLOGICAL grounds for the statement "life begins at conception" and "fetuses have souls".

If there aren't any, then this really isn't a religious matter.

Also, I would like to point out that the possession of souls in children has been a point of debate even before we understood the biology behind pregnancy and conception.

I'm not Catholic either, but I am a Christian, and I believe that God created every single one of us individually. That means, to me, that that creation includes babies from the moment of conception. Possibly even before conception (who am I to limit God?)

Email from our pastor in response to above homily.

Deacon James,

Your sermon during last weekend Masses generated many comments regarding
the unsuitability and inappropriateness of its contents. Your disparaging,
judgmental and intolerant tone of your sermons made many people unhappy in
the past, and this last weekend's sermon had many people directly
complaining to myself that you have crossed the lines on many levels. Your
political views being included in the sermon, even though carefully
structured, threaten the church's IRS tax-exempt status if they were to
continue. Therefore I am putting on hold your preaching on Sundays until
further notice. We will discus your status after the elections are over.

Thank You very much.
