Animation advice: First off, look for internships and job opportunities long before you graduate. Soon after finishing the second year (assuming it's a 4 year degree there) is a good time to start. Internships maybe even sooner.
Just because you think you might never use a program again, DON'T forget how to work with it.
There's not too much 3D animation around here, so don't be afraid to look elsewhere for work. If he wants to do graphic design then these three programs will probably be most useful: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign (all Adobe).
Work the hell out of your portfolio. A good portfolio can go a long way.
Scope out the field for trends and learn as much as you can about animation or graphic design.

But wait! You are in animation? My boyfriend is starting at Webster in the fall for animation. Any advice?
