Ireland is beautiful and the vacation does them all good, but all good things come to an end; Stragen leaves to meet Melidere on his way back to Windsor, and Martel takes Candice and Inga home a few days later. "Good night, Inga," Candice says, touching the little girl's cheek as Sophie takes her away - she doesn't know who is there, but she gathers that it is someone Martel knows.

"Goodnight, Mommy," Inga sighs, against Sophie's shoulder - she's getting too big to be carried by anyone not her 6'3" father, but it's quicker, and Martel doesn't sound patient.

Judging by the way he slams the driver's side door shut, at least. The woman approaching pauses (at Mommy), heels on stone. "Hello, Martel," she says, rallying.

"I'm sorry, Candice, this won't take long."

"What's going on?"

She studies the woman in question with quiet curiosity, but isn't going to interrupt or cause a scene - that's not her way, to begin.

In the light, it becomes more obvious - Inga's her father's child in temperament, but dark eyes aside they don't really look much alike. Her features and complexion came from her mother: Lillias, standing in front of the house, looking injured.

"I don't know," Martel says, pocketing his keys. "I don't really want to, either. Get off my property, Lillias, or I'll have you removed."

"That is no way at all to greet the mother of your child."
