Rules for Fanfiction

Feb 14, 2011 21:46

These rules are to be taken under advisement by anyone who is considering fanfiction. While many of these rules can be broken if you are a good enough author, you probably aren't.

1. If you're going to pair two characters they must have been in a room longer than 10 minutes without actively fighting or trying to murder one another.
2. If you're going to pair two characters they must must have actually been in the same room as one another at some point.
3. If you're going to pair two characters they must not already be in a committed relationship with another character.
4. If you're going to pair two characters the story must not be shorter than 5,000 words (Characterization like that takes time.)
5. Your summaries must not contain "lol plz R&R".
6. Summaries must not contain "So my friend and I fall through a whirlpool and end up in -insertfandomhere-"
7. No more "7 Minutes in Heaven" stories. NO MORE.
8. Do NOT say " I suck at summaries" in your summary.
9. Please spell check the fucking title of your story.
10. Do not list your summary as "summary inside."
11. Do not type your title and summary in all caps. It hurts my eyes.
12. If your fan fic MUST contain an OC for the story to work, please please please, do not have them enter a romantic relationship with ANYONE.
13. Please note in your summary if there is gender bending or mpreg.
14. Don't argue the scientific validity of mpreg.
14a) Only have mpreg if there is a reasonable explanation (i.e. It's actually mentioned in Torchwood.)
14b) Even in such a case, please remember it would work in a VASTLY different way than traditional pregnancy, and would more than likely be vastly dangerous for all parties involved.
15. Please, watch more than one episode of the show before writing your fan fic.
16. If someone recommends getting a beta in a review, get a beta.
17. Being OOC is not something to STRIVE for. Stop it.
18. Most word processors have a spell check, USE IT.
18a) Remember, spell check does not catch the difference between they're, there, and their, or your and You're, please double check these manually.
19. Never hold your story hostage for reviews. It is okay to ask for them, but never to say "I will only update when I get x reviews."
20. If your OC's weakness is "caring too much", you are doing it wrong.
21. Just no self/friend inserts ever. Ever.
22. If you do not know what a thesaurus is, stop writing, now, forever.
23. The High School universe is very cliche and should only be written if you have something that makes it original.
24. If your summary includes the word 'except' on more than one point, you have failed before you've begun.
25. Saying "Bloody 'Ell" before each sentence does not constitute a British accent. Stop that.
26. Accents are implied, you don't need to try to type phonetically.
27. If you are not writing everything in the language of the fandom, do not add random words that you know. Exception for words or terms that simply do not translate.
28. Please remember, if they're reading a fanfic, they've probably seen the show, you can assume they know where locations are, and who people are, but short introductions are not against any rules.
29. Pay attention to tenses and point of views.
30. Find a way to differentiate between internal monologues and spoken dialogue. Italics are your friend.
31. Do not write your stories in script format. You are not writing a play.
31a) If you ARE writing a play, make sure to obtain the proper permissions.
32. If you're writing hurt/comfort, please try to give a legitimate reason why the character is, y'know, hurt.
33. Don't use "manhood" more than three times. It is a silly word.
34. If you are writing a fic with rape in it, do not have the victim fall in love with the rapist, Stockholm Syndrome excepted.
35. Do not add random cracks in the 4th Wall if you expect your story to be taken seriously. (Cracks in Amy Pond's Wall are okay.)
35a) Or any wall whilst Amy is a part of the story.
36. The Joker will not change his ways for your OC.
37. Characters who are portrayed as INSANE are not misunderstood, they are ill, please treat them as such.
38. Long lost siblings is probably the worst basis for an OC ever. It is up there with long lost childhood fiancee.
39. Don't write a character as a shrieking harpy just because s/he interferes with your OTP.
40. If at any point you think, say, or have a character say "You/s/he just needs to be loved." You have to stop.
41. Serious trauma cannot be fixed with "healing hugs".
        41a) Or the "healing cock."
42. If a character has a crippling fear/insecurity, you may incorporate it into your fic, you may NOT center the story around it.
42a) Unless said story is about them overcoming said fear/insecurity.
42b) Assuming you understand that people do not simply "Get over" crippling insecurities.
43. Correct medical terminology has never been sexy.
44. When in doubt, refer to Pokemon element physics. (I'm looking at you, Kishimoto.)
        44a) Lightning beats earth wuh?
45. Character bashing is okay to the extent that they are still in character. Do not randomly have the teacher go off and shove a basket of burning puppies into an orphanage unless they were usually inclined to do so.
46. It is generally a bad idea to have any character do ANYTHING to harm puppies or Kittens....Unless that character has already done that in the show.
46a) "Who DARES leave a puppy and baby seal in my path?!"
47. "Mysterious" is not an accurate character description.
47a) Nor is any other single adjective.
48. Don't answer the rhetorical questions in your own summary.
(Aside A) If the Doctor didn't fall in love with Amy Pond, he's not going to fall in love with you.
Look at her, look in the mirror.....Yeah...That's right.
49. Cussing should only be placed in areas where it makes sense with characters who would normally cuss.
‎(Aside B) Snape only loved one woman and it wasn't you.
50. If you think that "My Immortal" is an acceptable form of fanfiction, ban yourself from the internet for life.
51. If you plan on releasing in chapters, either had a definite schedule, or release when a chapter is done, do not release a 600 word blurb and call it a chapter.
51a) Don't make your Author Note as long as your story.
52. It is always a nice courtesy to send out a message if you are going on hiatus or abandoning a story. Keeping readers hopes up for months is mean.

We'll see what gets added to this as life goes on. Give me your suggestions.
