[Background]
Akito is the current head of the Sohma family. Akito's father Akira was the previous head of the family, and it was always known that Akito would be his heir. Because of this, when Akito was born, her mother claimed that the heir to the family shouldn't be a woman, and insisted on raising her as a boy instead. (Really, what's more likely is that Akito's mother wanted to be the only woman in Akira's life. She was always jealous of the amount of attention Akira paid Akito, even before Akito was born.) Because of this, Akito acts, dresses, and talks like a man, and both the reader and almost all of the characters are unaware of her true gender for a large majority of the series. Even after the fact that she's a woman is revealed, she's still largely referred to with male pronouns, so that's what I'll be using for most of this application. I APOLOGIZE FOR ANY CONFUSION.

The Sohma family is under something called the Zodiac curse. Certain members of the family are possessed by spirits of animals in the Chinese zodiac. When their bodies become weak, or they hug a member of the opposite sex, they change into that animal. They're also inexorably linked to another member of the family, who is the spirit of God from the zodiac legend. (Or the Emperor, in some versions, but in the version that the series uses, it's God.) This position of God currently belongs to Akito.

(It's worth noting that the position of God does not seem to be directly linked to one's being the head of the family; Akito's father Akira was not God. Information on previous heads of the family is not given in the series, so it's impossible to tell how closely the two positions are related. Akito, however, is both God and the head of the family, and the two positions are referred to interchangeably for a lot of the series.)

Akito's been God ever since he was born, and the head of the family since pretty soon after that, and he grew up being given special treatment, with everyone around him telling him that he was special and important. Except for his mother, Ren. She never liked Akito, because Akira paid more attention to him instead of her. Ren had previously been one of Akira's attendants before she married him, and the other attendants of the household had never liked her. When Akira died, they basically ceased to acknowledge her as having any power, and started spending all their time with Akito instead. This is when the long-standing argument between Akito and Ren first began -- Akito believed in the eternal bond his father had told him about, and Ren insisted that the bond wasn't real. The attendants were on Akito's side, and to help prove his importance and help him get over his father's death, they gave him a special box, saying that it contained Akira's soul.

But, to everyone else, Akito was God. Being constantly told how important he was had a great effect on him from a young age. He got used to doing whatever he wanted and no one stopping him, which led to him developing a pretty big superiority complex over the rest of the zodiac. At the same time, however, always having the status of "special" kept him apart from the others, and prevented him from forming any kind of real relationships.

Akito's "best friend" as a small child was Yuki, who was basically sold off to Akito by his parents for better standing in the family. Akito forced Yuki to stay close to him, away from everyone else, and often mentally tortured him by locking him up in a dark room for long periods and saying cruel things to him.

When Akito was still quite young (the exact age isn't given, but say around 10), the curse on Kureno, the rooster of the zodiac, suddenly broke. Akito could instantly sense when the bond between them broke, and, not understanding what was going on, she threw a fit, screaming and begging for Kureno not to leave her. Kureno promised not to leave her side, and ever since then Akito's kept him very close, to the point of not letting him have any kind of life away from her. He was made her personal assistant, and at some point when Akito was older, the two of them slept together, though the details of that aren't given.

Akito always has a fiery temper when things displease him, especially if they involve anything he interprets as one of the zodiac members trying to leave him. He particularly dislikes it when they try to tell them that they're in love with someone. He becomes extremely violent in those circumstances, and has given lasting injuries to more than one person. (He caused permanent damage to one of Hatori's eyes, and pushed Rin out a second-story window.) He's also verbally and sometimes emotionally abusive of everyone, even people such as Kureno and Shigure that he actually likes. Most of the zodiac members are afraid of incurring his wrath, and a few such as Yuki and Kyo are just downright terrified of him.

Shortly before Kyo enters high school, he makes a bet with Akito: if Kyo can defeat Yuki before he graduates from high school, Akito will stop referring to him as a "monster" and will let him join the zodiac. If Kyo fails, however, Akito will lock him up forever in the dark isolation room made for the Cat.

Like so many other things in the series, all of this stuff starts to change when Tohru Honda shows up. Akito doesn't actually appear himself until a little ways into the series, but he's involved from the very beginning -- Shigure has to go to him to get approval for Tohru living at his house. Akito's known about Tohru from the beginning, and Shigure keeps him updated on what Tohru's been doing throughout the series.

Akito really doesn't actually do much. He mostly stays in the main house and does head-of-family sorts of things, which are never really elaborated on. And really, he makes Kureno do most of it anyway. He also spends a lot of time being sick. So while he has a number of appearances in the series, most of them are very brief and don't actually have any effect on the overall plot. I'm only going to cover the events where he did something significant, or something happened that affected him.

His first major appearance is in chapter 20, when he visits the high school many of the younger zodiac members attend. This is when he first meets Tohru face-to-face, and he manages to be extremely polite while still terrifying Yuki, until Tohru stops him. On the way back he tells Shigure that Tohru is ugly and stupid, and clearly poses no problem.

After this, Akito has no major appearances aside from flashbacks and brief cameos until chapter 58, when he crashes a trip the other zodiac members took to the beach. He basically just shows up and makes himself comfortable, putting a giant damper on the trip for everyone else, and starts making everyone come see him. He seems to be trying to force everyone to leave Tohru by herself, even going so far as summoning Kyo to see him when he hates Kyo. He and Kyo get into an argument (this isn't unusual), and that along with Ren acting up at the main house gets him worked up to the point where he storms off to see Tohru in the middle of the night. He basically tells her to stop interfering with the zodiac when it isn't her business, but this doesn't quite have the effect he intended; now she has a renewed desire to try to break the curse. (This is also when Tohru first realizes that Akito is God.)

Chapter 97 is of note, because this is when Kureno tells Tohru about his curse being broken and the fact that Akito is really a girl. Sometime shortly after this, Rin, in an attempt to learn from Ren how to break the curse, tries to steal a box from Akito, the one that's supposed to contain Akira's soul. Akito catches Rin in the act and retaliates by locking her up in the Cat's isolated room. Chapter 105 is when Haru finally realizes this and confronts Akito about it, but Kureno actually discovered it shortly before him, and took Rin away to the hospital. Akito and Haru get in a fight, and Haru actually manages to scare him before he leaves. Kureno scolds Akito for what he did to Rin, though the household maids scold Kureno in turn for betraying Akito by letting her out.

Akito stays angry at Kureno for a while over this, and spends most of his time sulking in his room and being a bit sick. In chapter 115, Akito's a little less cranky and actually has a conversation with Kureno, about the box Rin tried to steal. But shortly after Kureno leaves and Akito goes to sleep, Momiji's curse suddenly breaks. And this is the part where I'm taking him from :D

[Some very important and personality-changing events happen very shortly after this, but I'm not going to go into detail about them here. Short version: Momiji tells Akito that he's going to leave, Ren comes and takes the box, Akito tries to stab Ren, Hiro's curse breaks, Akito runs off, Kureno follows Akito and tries to calm him down, Akito stabs Kureno and runs to Shigure's house, where he meets Tohru and has an emotional breakdown at her, and just when Akito's starting to calm down...Tohru falls off a cliff. After this Akito visits both Kureno and Tohru in the hospital, undergoes a rather large personality change as a result of everything that's happened, and eventually breaks the remaining curses himself. Happy endings all around.]

[Personality]
Akito's surface personality isn't really someone you'd want to spend time with. He considers himself superior to everyone else because of his positions, and expects people to do whatever he wants. That's what he's used to. He's not always rude -- sometimes he can be perfectly polite -- but he's usually condescending, and often downright mean. He says things that are clearly intended to hurt people, usually aimed right at what he knows their weak points are, but he insists that what he's saying isn't mean, because it's true. He has a very low opinion of most people, and acts like he's giving them a gift by paying any attention to someone as low as them. Obviously this attitude doesn't endear him to anyone, and most of the zodiac members try to avoid him whenever possible.

He's extremely controlling when it comes to the other members of the zodiac. He insists on deciding where they live and where they go to school, and who they can have relationships with. If they defy him or do something he doesn't like, he becomes violent, hitting people and throwing anything he can get his hands on, all the while screaming that it's their fault for making him do this.

Underneath, however, there are reasons for all of his behaviors. Growing up the way he did, he's used to everyone doing exactly what he says, and the maids of the household encourage this by telling him that that's what should happen. Even older members of the family will fall all over themselves to gain his favor, so it's no surprise that this is what he's come to expect. Because of all this, he's never really had a relationship with anyone that isn't "I'm your God and you exist to do what I say", so he truly doesn't know what to do when taken out of that situation. He's always been better than everyone else, and that sets him apart from them and keeps him from ever really forming any kind of connection with them. He clings to the idea of the "eternal bond" between God and the zodiac, because it means that they'll always stay with him no matter what he does, just because of who he is.

The idea of that bond breaking or someone leaving terrifies Akito to no end, which is why she freaks out so much when Kureno's curse breaks. Without the bond to hold him there, there's no reason for Kureno to stay, and that's one less person around to accept her. She's afraid of someone else's curse breaking, and then someone else's; so she begs Kureno to stay, and acts like nothing's changed, like if she pretends that nothing's changed nothing else will change. Of all the members of the zodiac, he's the one she clings to the most, because he's the one who has the potential to go the farthest away.

She seems to view zodiac members forming romantic relationships as a more minor way of leaving her, or at least loving someone else more than her, which is why she reacts to it so violently. When Hatori tells her he's in love with Kana, she causes permanent damage to his eye (while yelling that it's all Kana's fault); when Rin tells her she's in love with Haru, she pushes Rin out a second-story window; when Hiro tells her he's in love with Kisa, she smacks Kisa so hard that she ends up in the hospital for a few weeks. She really can't tolerate the idea of someone leaving her, because then she wouldn't know what to do. So she punishes them for trying to leave and thus forces them to stay.

Akito really can't stand Tohru because all of the zodiac members love her more than her, and because Tohru is trying to break the curse and pull all of the zodiac away from her. She treats Tohru horribly, and keeps insisting that she's an ugly girl whom no one should like. (Actually, Akito is jealous of Tohru for being prettier than her. But it takes a long, long time for her to be able to admit that.)

Aside from Kureno, the person Akito worries the most about leaving her is Shigure. He told her a long time ago that he loves her, and continues to say that it's true, but he's actually the person who's most distant from her in terms of their bond. Basically, for someone who claims to love her he doesn't really act like it most of the time; he's not particularly nice to her, and tends to point out her flaws a little too often. She doesn't understand why he acts the way he does, and it tends to drive her crazy, so she's fickle about when it's okay to be around him. Sometimes she wants him with her immediately, and sometimes she refuses to let him be near her. Conversely, she rarely has any problem with Hatori or Kureno being around her, because they're always nice to her.

The person Akito likes the least, other than Tohru and Shigure on a bad day, is his mother Ren. Ren has never accepted the idea of God or the bond, and has gotten in more than one fight with Akito over the subject. She doesn't think Akito is special, or that any of the zodiac really loves him. He can't deal with this because it hits a little too close to home with what he's really scared of, so he keeps her far away from him and doesn't go near her if he can help it. There was one time that Shigure slept with Ren to get back at Akito, and this only served to make Akito hate her even more; now he doesn't let anyone in the zodiac near Ren, especially the men, because she might try to take them away from him.

The inner workings of Akito's brain are mostly known to the people she's close to (Kureno, Shigure, Hatori), and can certainly be guessed at by the other zodiac members. Tohru also figures it out pretty fast. However, Akito does not actually admit any of this until very late in the series, after more of the zodiac members start to defy her and the Certain Events happen with Ren, Kureno, and Tohru. All of this forced her to come to terms with her own feelings, and she realized what she'd been doing wrong. Her temper deflates and she becomes very apologetic for the way she's treated everyone. She also starts actually dressing and acting like a girl. From the point in canon I'm taking her from, this has only barely started to happen, but it has the potential to happen in the RP depending on how events go, so I've included it anyway.

[Specialties/Abilities]
Akito has the aforementioned bond with all of the zodiac members, but this really doesn't amount to very much as an "ability". Basically zodiac members will treat him differently than other people. Otherwise, Akito has no supernatural abilities. His natural abilities include getting sick a lot, screaming very loudly, smacking people very hard, throwing things very hard, saying mean things, and being important while doing as little as possible.

[Affection] Affections are not entirely unwelcome, but will likely confuse the hell out of him.
[Fighting] Akito has...no physical prowess whatsoever. He's likely to piss some people off and perhaps even try to hurt them, but he will get his ass kicked in any actual fight, and he knows it. So when the going gets too tough, he will run away and/or start freaking out. Plz be gentle.

[Other Facts]
-Akito doesn't like women. This may be a bit confusing when she is one, but she doesn't really seem to think of herself as a woman, and as the main woman in her life is Ren, from her remarks she seems to associate all women with Ren. (Particularly Rin.) She hates Ren, so she hates women.

-Akito gets sick a lot. The main reason is actually her own emotional turmoil making her physically sick, but her father also had a sickly disposition, so it's possible she inherited some of that from him.

-Akito has slept with Kureno once and Shigure multiple times. She's really only interested in sleeping with Shigure at this point.
