Rating: R? Possibly. . .
#01 - Ring
He didn’t belong in the city, in the midst of nobility and wealth, and so he’d let her go on her own; at the sight of the elegant ring on her finger when she returned, he thought maybe he should’ve tried harder to find his place in her world.
#02 - Hero

#03 - Memory
Every year on Midsummer night, she left the her home and children to take shelter in the forests off to the west; there she would stand, bask in the wind and the warmth, and remember a time when the sky and the land and the trees were her home, with a man and his demon’s smile as her companions.
#04 - Box
As they entered the room where their marriage night was to be celebrated, Thea’s eyes caught on an elegantly crafted box of the finest woods; inside, a single rose with all its thorns.
#05 - Run
Where she ran, he would chase, both of them laughing, tumbling to the ground and crushing the wildflowers beneath them; his hands ruined the delicate spin of her hair atop her head, lips laying claim to her soft mouth.
#06 - Hurricane
The force of the angry sky forced them to seek temporary shelter in a small cave overrun with weeds and wild growth; they kept themselves occupied under a pile of blankets and fur, fueling an even greater storm in their blood.
#07 - Wings
“I would have wings,” she declared as her answer, standing and throwing her arms back, feeling the cool wind on her cheeks, “Can’t you imagine what it would be like to fly?”
#08 - Cold
The water dripped down through her hair, tracing a line down her shoulder and into the fabric at her chest; she shivered, and he laughed, “Cold?”
#09 - Red
She wondered at the odd coloring of the stones, wondered at Evrain’s concern as he pressed a hand to her stomach; she was fine.
#10 - Drink
“Here, drink this, you stupid girl,” he said, helping her to sit up; his ever-present smirk was nothing against the tenderness in his touch.
#11 - Midnight
When she woke screaming, sweating, drenched in the fear of invisible terrors, it was the coolness of his voice and the steady touch of his hands that slowed her racing blood; afterwards, his usual attempts at bedding her only set it boiling again.
#12 - Temptation
He glanced away from the gentle curve of her neck, tucking his hands under his chin, refusing to give into temptation; surely just a small tickle wouldn’t hurt?
#13 - View
He spent the evening on the rock face across from the river, providing a perfect view of the woman wading through the thin current, her long locks of auburn tied back and braided, falling down the slope of her back as it gently painted beads of water along the dusky skin of her neck and shoulders; when she caught him, his response had already been prepared, “Am I not allowed to look?”
#14 - Music
The music stirred a well of memories she’d long since covered in stone, so this time she buried them in his arms, and knew they’d stay safe there.

His fingers drifted across the silken skin of her side, pressing in just the perfect spot to tickle the most.
#16 - Cover

#17 - Promise
“You wouldn’t regret it,” he assured her, sliding a hand across the strap at her shoulder, dragging the cloth so it flowed down the smooth column of her arm.

#21 - Silence
Evrain stood at her side as they both waited, gazing out at the advancing regements, not a word between them; for once, he didn’t laugh, and for once, she wished he would.

He laughed because he could not help but envy the fire in her eyes.
#24 - Strength
He knew he should stand and leave her, that if he slept by her side it would become about more than just sex, but the softness of her breasts, the curve of her back snared him in place.
#25 - Mask
His smile slipped and shattered the mask as her skirts whirled into another dance on Kaj’s arm.
#26 - Ice
The frozen surface of the lake called to her innate sense of curiousity, and like a kitten attempting to pounce on its first prey, she leapt without proper experience or knowledge, and went sprawling on her back as her feet slid out from under her; Evrain smirked on the sideline, hearing her curses across the distance and knowing how cold her butt must be.
#27 - Fall
“Go, stranger, and to Sparta tell, that here, obedient to her laws, we fell,” she recited slowly, quietly, her hands gripping the heavy sword by her side.

There was a shot and a sickening thud as her body slumped against the stone; he turned away and swung his blade at a wall of enemies, knowing the only way to help her was to win.
#31 - Sacred
Evrain pushed through the curtain and strode over to the makeshift bed, kicking both figures swiftly in the side; Thea glared up at him from the pillow of her companion’s chest, “Is nothing sacred to you?!”

“If this must be the end of us,” he whispered to her lips, a grin spreading across his own, “then let’s make it a very, very good one.”

With a single touch of his hand, the world suddenly became much smaller.
#34 - Formal
“Your Majesty,” he bowed before her, stiff and frowning, finding the whole formality absurd, having already shared their friendship, their blood, and their bed.
#35 - Fever
After her pallor faded away, fever set in; she’d spend the night tossing, turning, spilling words from her red and chapping lips: memories, places, apologies; someone else’s name.
#36 - Laugh
His shoulders shook as he pressed his face into her neck, his fists bunched in her hair; she frowned, “Are you--are you laughing at me?”

“I love no one, Thea, you of all people know this,” his green eyes captured hers, hands steady as they gestured to the door; he was a trained liar.

#39 - Overwhelmed
She whirled around, frightening him with the speed and ferocity of her snarl, “What would you know about my emotions when all you’ve ever felt is amusement at the stupidity of those around you!”
#40 - Whisper
They huddled in the back corner of an old storage closet, his hand crushed between them and occasionally striking out to tickle the skin of her side, causing a strained giggle to escape - if they got caught she’d kill him -; finally she gave in, whispering as loud as she dared, “Stop it!”
#41 - Wait
The waiting was the worst; the knowledge that their lives would end in these walls, within the next few hours, hung over their heads, but the waiting, the waiting and the sitting made Thea wish for a quicker fate.
#42 - Talk
“Talking’s overrated,” he breathed against her neck, his lips leaving a wet trail to her collar bone; the moisture and evening air sent pleasant chills down her spine.
#43 - Search
She tilted her head to the side, “That is rather the purpose of hiding, isn’t it, to make you search?”
#44 - Hope
The night passed quickly, her arms tiring long before she’d hoped they would, still she swung her blade for she could do nothing else; it was the spark of the rising sun, caught on the bloodied steel, that lit the fire anew in her heart.
#45 - Eclipse
It began with the night; she would take him to her bed, but Evrain didn’t mind - he was hardly chaste himself - but when it carried over into the light, after days and weeks, when little gestures began to speak of emotion that lasted longer than lust, Evrain worried.
#46 - Gravity
His cocky grin radiated down from his perch on the branch above her head, driving her slowly nuts; when he turned his head to get the hair out of his eyes, she lobbed a rock at his hand - the one he was using as an anchor for his precarious seating -, sitting back against the trunk in satisfaction as he fell face-first into the grass at her side.

If she accepted Kaj’s proposal, the life she’d known on the road would end, right where it had begun: in a world of lavish balls and fancy gowns; etiquette, propriety, and decadence.

#50 - Breathe
For the first time in many years on the road, she found herself unable to sleep; the night sounds she’d grown accustomed to had suddenly changed, contained a new layer: his breathing.
