...I can't figure out why, but grep won't work on OpenOffice files (despite working on Word and Excel files).

I've had to batch-convert my spreadsheets and word processing documents so that I can grep them properly. Quite annoying.

Try using TextWrangler (free downloadable text editor with powerful greppage!), or listen to spherulitic because he is smart.
