I replied over at women_grads and then I got paranoid and deleted the comment. I hope things are going well for you and I do remember you :) I do write on Buffy but I can't remember why I was telling you that. What's up?
hey- mind if i friend you? saw a post on your interests in who_got_in and am interested in your work. am also moving to SD in the fall for grad school and would like to know more about any queer of color communities there (if any!). thanx.
I don't mind at all. Congrats on getting in a program. Where are you going to grad school in SD? What program? I am currently my MA in Women's Studies at SDSU. What part of my research are you interested in? Surprisingly, SD has a pretty awesome queer/LGBT community (Hillcrest and University Heights). There are a few queer women of color groups and organizations in SD but I don't know about communities or bars. I don't know much about queer men though.
i saw you were doing work on sci fi films-- am trying to tie in queer/feminist themes to anime/comics so I'd like to see what tracks you're taking in your own research.
I'm going to UCSD's Ethnic Studies program- though my interests are specifically in queer Filipina American cultural production and critical studies of Japanese pop culture.
I have been to Hillcrest and hopefully will be able to find a place there to live. If not, i'm looking at North Park, South Park, Golden Hill, and places like that.
Oh, and I don't know much about queer men either, at least not in the academic sense. Just know about my friends and their lifestyles!
My thesis is on posthumanism, free maternity and science fiction. Mostly feminist, not so much queer. If I was looking at lesbian science fiction novels then it would be much more related to queer theory (or not depending on which lesbian scholars you are referring) but I am looking at mainstream sci-fi films from the 70's. Your research sounds very cool. I don't know much about anime but I did present a paper about lesbian sexuality in action comics last year. I can give you a list of sources if you like. Have you found a place in SD? I am not sure when you are coming to SD but a few of my roomies are leaving soon (one in july and the other in august). I live in the Golden Hill area and we are a very chill house (well it will be even more chill when my roommate's cockateils are gone). I know this is kinda random but I thought it was worth a shot. Anyway whenever you come out here, we should meet up. I can show you the bars :-) Oh by the way, my name is Denise.
