Haven't picked up a camera for Art purposes in while and I'm trying to get back int he swing of things... These are just some of my first attempts (in like 2 years!)... Just one day of shooting on HWY 165 in Alabama... This is really not what my work typically looks like, but I've been looking at a lot of Joel Sternfeld's work recently and I ( Read more... )

Congrats on picking up a camera again! I really love 1,3, &6, the look like they'd be great intros to their own photo-documentaries. What were you shooting with?

It's actually an older Minolta... A lot of people say Canons are better, but my very first camera was a Minolta and this one seems to render blues better than a Canon...

i'm a big fan of #3 myself, and can't wait to see what you do with it!

also, remember that series you did of the hot model guy at the motel? those had a cinematic quality too, so i already expected a similar style to these ones you've posted now. :)

So are you saying these DO have the cinematic quality? If so, I'm glad! Even when I try to be distant and more documentarian, the director in me can't stay hidden for very long...

not all of them, but a few (specifically the third and (i can't remember the number) the barn interior one definitely do. :)

My goal was to keep the aperture fairly high and get as much detail as I could out of everything in the scene... I tend to want to crank the aperture down very low and emphasize one particular element and let all the rest fade into blur... Which gets gimicky really quickly, I think... I missed some good shots because I stayed in Eufaula too long and the sun set before I could get back to spots I'd scouted earlier...

Thank you! When I saw the scene I immediately thought of this Jeff Wall photo:

I like the last and second last - especially the interior. It's funny - I thought this was quite cinematic - it's almost like a set. Nice light quality and texture on the timber. .. Why the circular floor? does it revolve?

yes, i believe it did, at one time, revolve... But I was technically trespassing so I couldn't stay around long enough to figure out the mechanics.. LOL
