it must be very local then 'cause I'd never heard it to mean forward rolls in Nottingham where I grew up! :D

Well it was my mate Ed discussing it with people he works with in Burton, who had also never heard of it, who first alerted me to it so I think it's Birmingham and Black Country at the very most.

Roly-poly seems to be a common alternative.

i remember we had a maths teacher from the south east. can't remember his name. he had a hardcore side parting (no combover!)...must have been when i was in the fourth or fifth year? anyway he refused to accept that anything could be bostin.
