Reno

Dec 02, 2007 14:04

So! On top of New Mexico and Arizona I will also be presenting the state of Nevada for my English presentation. I just have one little question.

Reno is called the biggest little city in the world. Anyone care to explain to me why?

Thank you!

Because a LOT of people live in Nevada, but most of them live far from Las Vegas. Reno, as I'm sure you know, is like a mini-Vegas. It's smaller, and not as glamorous, but it's more accessible. It's got all the "ammenities", I guess you could say, it's got multiple casinos (one really big one), many restaurants, and one (possibly two?) shopping mall(s), and an airport (it's not international though, you've got to fly into Vegas for that). Many people in the northern region of the state travel to Reno frequently for supplies and/or entertainment/shopping. Nevada is mainly made up of smaller towns. My mum, for example, lives in Minden, NV, which is about 45 minutes north of Reno. She goes there a couple of times a month for shopping because things are cheaper there, and more easily accessible. I'd venture to say that there are a LOT of people just like my mum, who live in the smaller surrounding towns (but who are too far from Vegas!) who frequently visit Reno for all the obvious reasons.

Make sense?

I think I'm just clarifying what Anna is saying.

Reno itself has a very small population. However, with the gambling and recreation opportunities people flock to Reno in droves. Likewise, because Reno has all of the amenities of a big city to handle all of the people that come to gamble, people that live in the entire region typically go there to handle government matters, buy specialized items not available in the towns, and so forth.

So the short reason is that it has a small population but it swells significantly because it is a hub for people living in the region, gambling, recreation (great skiing, and it's not far from Lake Tahoe), and even education (the University of Nevada - Reno is located there).

Yes! It's a hub! haha, that's exactly what I was trying to say, but I just couldn't get the right words.
