WHY CAN'T YOU HIRE DECENT ARTISTS FOR THE ALICE IN WONDERLAND COMIC?????? WHYYYYY?????
I know they're going for a "funky style", for the lack of better description, because that's what Underlanders are like. Weird and funky. However, there is a very big difference between "lazy-as-heck art" and "stylized art". This goddamn comic is LAZY AS HECK.
Take The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest comic. It has stylized art, what with the angular features and all that, but it's still GOOD. The backgrounds are properly drawn in, the characters still closely resemble their original movie counterparts, and although slightly different, it still gives you an enjoyable experience. That's why we buy these movie comic books. To enjoy a different experience and interpretation of the same source.
The AIW one is NOT GOOD. It's beyond "not good". It's TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!! It's abhorrent, appalling, atrocious, repugnant, repulsive... I could go on and on about how terrible I think it is. Might as well speak in Wonderland/Underland speak while I'm at it, eh? It's slurking urpal slackush scrumly frumious!!!!!!
The characters barely resembles their movie counterparts, the backgrounds are hazy and almost non-existent in most of the panels, the panels themselves are haphazard and messy, and it jumps between scenes with barely any transition AT ALL.
Again, I understand what they're getting at with the non-angular panelling and stuff. They want it to look organic and fantasy-like, but come ON!!! There are better ways to do that! The characters get these very non-angular treatment too, I figure to go with the "traditional Burton look" with big round heads and eyes, but something must have gone wrong in the execution because they all just look like bugs to me

Thackery, the Hare, looks jittery and is prone to mad fits of panic. He constantly THROWS STUFF AT YOUR HEAD!!! HE SHOULD NOT LOOKS SMILINGLY HAPPY LIKE HE DID THERE!!! I mean, even TARRANT was jittery and nervous, and he's the MAD HATTER WHO ONLY LOSES IN GRINNING CONTEST TO THE CHESHIRE CAT
I'm going to let it slide because it might be just my bad memory acting up and I don't really remember the scene well, but even if Thackery WAS grinning, the grin would look DIFFERENT. This is ART FAILURE right there. EPIC ART FAILURE.
Another example of art failure is when Iracebeth (Queen of Hearts) slaps Stayne (Knave of Hearts) for letting Alice escape. She does NOT look like she's slapping him. She looks like she just had her arms open wide, and suddenly Stayne is flung back by an unseen force and spews.... black substance from his mouth.
They didn't even have the decency to put MOTION LINES there. The only way I knew he just got slapped is because I already watched the movie prior to seeing these scans, Stayne was reeling back, there was a "twack" sounds effect, and this... star-like effect of impact. That effect is not quite extreme enough to represent a slap so hard that it sent someone reeling back and spitting blood/saliva. Urrrrggghhhhhnnnnnngnnnnn........
Palm, meet face. Head, meet desk. Get to know each other. Vigorously. VERY vigorously
I also don't like it when artists draw villains obviously ugly. Stayne and Iracebeth looks even squishier and slimier and more lopsided than the rest of the dang cast!! I would have let that slide because it's Disney and it's geared towards kids, and consider this as mostly just a personal pet peeve, but I will NOT because even Beckett and Barbossa looks semi-decent in the POTC comics
There's no excuse of "weird body proportions because the red queen's court is like that". STAYNE IS ONE OF THE FEW PEOPLE WHO HAS NORMAL HUMAN BODY PROPORTIONS AND FEATURES GODDAMMIT!!!!!!!!!! WHY IS HE ALL SPINDLY AND SQUISHY AND LUMPY??????
