Of course, there's always hope in the younger generation, and it is heart-warming to see this kind of enthusiasm. But y'know...just as many of them will grow up to be assholes as in any generation.
And they need to get off my damn lawn, too.
But seriously, this is what the hippies were saying in the late 60's. We won't repeat the errors of our parents! Yes, you will. And you'll invent new ones. And you'll scrape up some solutions that brilliantly, but just barely, keep us from extinction. And some people will be ridiculously well-off, and some people will be poor and sick and in pain, and most people will be somewhere in the anxious middle. All is as it ever was.
As a further cynical side-note, there's a whole mini-generation of kids being raised in a fundie bubble, largely thanks to technology we generally see as progressive. High-bandwidth internet access makes home schooling easier, Sky Angel provides a tailor-made media diet of anything that will not make baby Jesus cry (guess what their only news channel is?), Bible Camps for

It does seem that the world has been on the verge of significant change so many times that it seems depressing that we as a race (let alone our particular country) have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory more times than it should be rational to believe

Where did you find so many pessimistic depressing friends? I don't give a hoot what they say, my generation will kick the previous generations' collective ass

Hey, April - you totally do rock! Don't take my cynicism as discouragement. By all means, do your best to make the world a better place, as everyone should, no matter what generation or age. I'm not saying things won't get better in certain respects. What I'm saying is that sometimes even people with the best of intentions screw things up worse than they ever thought possible, and of course there are certain things about the human condition, like the existence of assholes, that are really unlikely to change much. There are always limits and trade-offs. You're perfectly justified in not believing in them or fighting as hard against them as you possibly can until you verify for yourself what the limitations are. I would be truly delighted to find that my expectations are too low!
