My mom and I discussed this...both about my dad's birthday and the day he died. Did we have to feel bad every year.

We decided no. First we converted the say Dad died to "Dad Day." A day to remember him with joy. Then we do the same thing with his birthday. We try to use the oportunity these days present to remember how much he meant to us...but we try to do it with joy, to celebrate him, rather than with sorrow.

I guess I had to deal with this young. On my 17th birthday, the young man I had a huge crush on died. I'm happy to say that, while I think of him from time to time, I seldom remember him on my birthday.

Dad Day is such a positive and fantastic way to honor him. Thank you for sharing the idea and taking the time to post. I know the subject is a powerful one. :)

Thanks so much for the support. Hugs, even virtual ones, are good for the soul. And I really needed them :) Also, I had two pieces of birthday cake tonight. It's hard to be sad when cake is involved.
