Will try and read ノルウェイの森 (Norwegian Wood) this summer in Japanese, as I keep hearing good things about it, am told it's relatively easy compared to his other works, and I couldn't get into any of Haruki Murakami's English-language works.
Are you still reading House of Leaves? Hope it hasn't been a disappointment after all the hype.
is rather 'straight up' for a Murakami but it's very still wonderfully good. A cult classic across Japan reportedly and the book that 'made him' there (versus The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle which is the one that 'made him' here)... My favourites so far are The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, A Wild Sheep Chase, Dance Dance Dance and Kafka on the Shore. The favourite short story is Super Frog Saves Tokyo (here the narrator gets points for reading the story to me so well, I have these years developed a mad obsessive fondness for narrators, especially [obviously] the truly gifted and the great). I also generally liked After Dark though it certainly left me hanging and I liked several other short stories too from the two collections though any more specific titles escape me: the frog one is my favourite and is probably, his best. Haven't started House of Leaves yet, Dylan got me a hard copy too and he's reading it now, finds some tattoo narrator guy to be an idiot and a boring show-off, he feels I'll be with that character very impatient and
( ... )
That narrator serves his purpose, though, contrapuntally speaking.
Yes, I heard Murakami writes nice short stories too, I might start with those instead. These days I mostly read nonfiction, and when I don't, I delve into mindless guilty pleasure stuff, urban fantasy, though I've still a long queue of 'literature' that I collect and will eventually return to. Which is easy, as you know, depending on whether you received the two super secret and elite book site links I sent to your Goodreads account months ago... ;p
