I don't know how you handle the transport, but if you don't want him to run away when you get down there you need to shut him up inside one room for awhile.
If there is a basement that isn't gross, that's ideal..
I know this doesn't sound very nice, but outdoor cats need to readjust when you take them somewhere new. Leaving them in one room for a week disorients them.
After that, let him walk around the house for a week or so before you let him go outside.
This is what my mom did with our outdoor cats, and they never ran away.
