Does that mean that they'd die if you left?

Does that mean to keep conscience intact and be guilt-free of murder you're moraly obliged never to leave them regardless of you're intelectual decisions?

Isn't it blackmail?

Or is it just being romantic?

Depends on who says it I suppose. I'd usually take it as emotional blackmail though.
