Yesterday I was reading the thoughts of a young friend on Twitter on how he (sorry if I got the gender wrong) felt that there was no God or if there was a God He had abandon him because of all the pain in his life. As part of my response I told him that "God did not promise us a life free of trouble, but he did promise we would not have to face it ( Read more... )

Yes, you got the gender right. I am a he. Thank you. :)

What I just don't understand is what people mean by "God doesn't abandon you/he stays by your side/he helps you" but then they say God gave us free will... so what does he do to help you? I need this explained to me. I don't get it.

If he doesn't intervene, then what does he do to help?

Sometimes it can be as simple as the strength and peace of mind to face what ever crisis I may come up against. But mainly it is the knowledge that there is a being out there that loves me unconditionally, A being that chose to love me first.

I have an 18 year-old daughter. By law I can no longer control what she does, nor do I want to. Because I love her I have to let her make her own mistakes so she can grow. Does it mean I won't rescue her if she needs it, by all means no. I will help her if I can. But I can't save her from everything and to do so might hurt her more than helped. She must make her own decisions and choices. If she chooses wrong she could get hurt or others could choose to hurt her. But hopefully she will learn from the experience and be stronger and able to make better decisions because of it. She knows that even if I don't run to her rescue that I still love her and will always love her. That is what God's love and present is like for me.
