Banning books just seems ridiculous to me. I think that making a ~big deal~ about "bad" books just ends up bringing more attention to them in the end, anyway. Really, if you had two books and they basically looked the same to you, but you knew that one had been bannnnnnnnned (ooooh), which would you want to read more? OBVIOUSLY the banned one! Because you want to see what is SO awful that someone would have to place such restrictions on it.
I'm totally with you on this. There are some books I'd be pretty squeamish about my (theoretical) kids reading, but I see that as my responsibility to discuss it with them, not an issue that should involve the library.
I'm thinking books like "The Secret" or "The Purpose Driven Life" for example. Books crammed with that kind of nonsense. But I would need to see it as an opportunity to discuss why I deeply disagree with those philosophies, and how to read such things skeptically.
