It'd been a gorram long time since Mal shared his bed with anything nearing regularity - living on a spaceship and avoiding interpersonal relationships did tend to make hay of that possibility. So, he'd gotten rather used to the realities of sleeping alone: having the whole bed to himself, no one stealing the covers, not worrying about keeping someone else awake on the nights he couldn't sleep, and all the other little idiosyncrasies that could easily drive a person to drink. Or at least to abandon an otherwise congenial sleeping arrangement
