So, I'm auditoning for The Music Man...

...and I'd like suggestions for songs to sing. Alto, with hints of mezzo-soprano in me. I don't know the musical well enough to just sing one of those songs, nor do I really know many other songs outside of Rent. So, thoughts?

Anything from a musical that was produced around the same time as The Music Man:

Carousel, The Sound of Music, Hello Dolly!, etc.

But more than that, this is a HAPPY production, so happy songs are key. You could try something from Pippin (I KNOW you know songs from this), The Wizard of Oz (Somewhere Over the Rainbow would be good--slow, but good).

Pick something you feel confident singing. I'm of the belief that 90% of your audition is how you perform the music and how you behave in front of the audition staff. Do you look confident and animated? Are you smiling? Is there energy in every atom in your being?

Then you're doing great. =)

Thank you, thank you, thank you. :) I'll definitely look into Pippin -- is it theoretically "kosher" to sing a song meant for a male part in a higher register?
