Character: Jr. (Gaignun Kukai Jr; Rubedo)
Series/Fandom: Xenosaga
Original/Alternate: Original
Age: Twenty-seven, but physically twelve
Gender: Male
Species: Human/U.R.T.V.
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Appearance: Jr. is what someone might call cursed with the body of a twelve-year-old boy. His body cannot grow past that point without risking the release of a part of himself that he is trying to suppress. As such, he remains deceptively small (he is roughly 4'7" and 84 lbs), and has cropped red hair and deep blue eyes. Other features of note are a tattoo of a red Chinese dragon on his upper left arm and the number 666 emblazoned on the palm of his hand. As far as dress is concerned, Jr. tends to dress casually, with a bit of a modern cowboy feel to his choices in outfits.
Personality: Jr. comes off as slightly rambunctious and extremely loud; well, truth to be told, he can be both of those things, especially when he wants to be. He talks big, but it's not as though he's without any merit behind his words: he can and will back them up as necessary. However, in spite of his rash actions, he is also very capable of making tough decisions and looking at a situation in full to make very calculated observations that do, indeed, live up to his true age. He is also fascinated by older action movies and classic novels, which have influenced his a lot of his actions.
Moreover, Jr. is very protective of anyone important in his life; this comes out most towards the 100-Series Observational Realian, MOMO, but it is also very clearly displayed for the people of the Kukai Foundation, as well as Shion and their other allies. If close enough to someone, Jr. won't usually hesitate in coming to that person's defense, and, at the same time, he will also find himself in the same state if someone who is largely unable to defend him or herself is threatened. Also, connected to people close to him, he does feel a lot of remorse where his brother, Albedo, is concerned; he bears some of the blame for how Albedo turned out, and finds it difficult to fight against him at times because of their connection, but also knows that, when it comes down to it, he is the one who has to stop him.
Finally, Jr. is a bit of a gambler and more than just a bit of a ladies' man; he's actually pretty suave, and has been known to attempt to teach the male Realians aboard the Durandal how to flirt (although the success of these endeavors is questionable at best).
Abilities/Weaponry: In spite of the advances in technology, Jr. fights with two old-fashioned pistols. In fact, he has a bit of an eye for them and loves to collect them. Jr. also has the ability to halt his cellular growth and division, and, as a U.R.T.V., he is said to have the ability to neutralize the mysterious and malignant waveform, U-DO. Additionally, as a variant U.R.T.V., he was essentially a chosen leader of the others, and was the commander of their Spiritual Link, and he has a unique power known as Red Dragon Mode. This power draws in his own power as well as that of other, surrounding U.R.T.V.s in an amplified anti-U-DO wave, increasing his power. In fact, his Red Dragon Mode was hailed as the one true, perfect anti-U-DO waveform, making Jr. the strongest of the U.R.T.V.s (and thus put in place as their leader). He doesn't particularly like this ability, however, as it can easily overcome his consciousness and cause him to act irrationally, and he suppresses it as best as he can within himself.
Jr. also has some mild telekinetic power, and, if there were other U.R.T.V.s around him, he would be able to communicate with them telepathically.
Weaknesses: It could be said that Jr.'s greatest weakness is his pigheadedness; he doesn't back down too easily, and he gets riled up quickly whenever someone is in danger, to the point where he could very easily become a liability instead of a help. He's even been told as much in the past: that, as cruel as it may sound, sometimes you have to ignore your own heart's wishes in order to actually accomplish your goal. Other than that, his own sense of responsibility and guilt towards Albedo always clouds his judgement where he is concerned, and he feels remorse for having to fight him in spite of knowing that it's his job to stop him (and he won't let anyone else replace him in such matters).
History: Created on Miltia, Jr. is a U.R.T.V. (U-DO Retro Virus): a 'designer child' created by Dr. Dimitri Yuriev to combat the mysterious and destructive waveform, U-DO. Born as the 666th U.R.T.V., Jr. is one of four variants who are more powerful than the other, standard U.R.T.V.s and who each have their own unique traits. In Jr.'s case, he ended up with red hair instead of the blonde of the standard U.R.T.V.s, and his eyes became a darker blue. However, on top of this, Jr. gained a unique ability in Red Dragon Mode, and was hailed as having the single perfect wavelength for combating U-DO, garnering him a position as the U.R.T.V.'s leader (much to the annoyance of the standard U.R.T.V.s).
His true name is Rubedo, and he was born conjoined at the heart with his twin brother, Albedo (U.R.T.V. #667); the two were separated after birth, and Jr. is able to feel his brother's heartbeat beside his own because of both their circumstance and the innate telepathic abilities that the U.R.T.V.s have with one another. Whereas Jr.'s power extends to the ability to halt cellular growth, Albedo's does the opposite and can speed that growth up immensely (making it possible for him to regrow any part of his body that he happens to lose). When he showed this to his two brothers, thinking that all U.R.T.V.s had the same ability, Nigredo (U.R.T.V. #669) became disturbed by the image of Albedo crushing his own head to regrow it, and Rubedo yelled at his twin for being so foolish as to think that was normal.
As part of the link training for the U.R.T.V.s, as well as their training to combat U-DO, they were to dive into the subconscious of a young girl named Sakura Mizrahi who was said to have "hyper-sensitivity to the U.M.N." (Unus Mundus Network), a central-nervous disease that manifested itself as severe autism that left her unable to communicate with the outside world. The idea was that, if the U.R.T.V.s could be successful in combating U-DO, they might be able to save her, as well. Within her mind, Sakura was every bit a normal girl, however, and she and Jr. grew close to each other, eventually falling in love. Before her death, he promised Sakura that he would protect both her mother and her unborn 'sister,' a Realian created by her father in her image, named MOMO.
During the Miltian Conflict, Jr. was to lead the Spiritual Link for the U.R.T.V.s in order to stop U-DO from destroying the planet of Miltia; he would have, in fact, except that he cut the link before they could do anything out of fear for everyone's lives. This is because, as they began their link, Jr. was able to glimpse a small portion of the future and saw that the entire planet would be destroyed starting from the point where they were. In spite of his cutting of the link, he did not act in time, and U-DO killed or drove mad all of the U.R.T.V.s except for Jr. and Nigredo; the only one of those touched by U-DO who survived was Albedo, who was driven mad from both the knowledge that he would eventually be left alone as his brothers would die and by U-DO's effects.
Jr. and Nigredo managed to get off of Miltia, however, when saved by the enigmatic chaos and Canaan.
The two went on to form the Kukai Foundation, taking on the names Gaignun Kukai (Nigredo) and Gaignun Kukai, Jr. (Rubedo/Jr.), with Jr. posing as Nigredo's son in spite of truly being his older brother. Its sole purpose in creation was to keep tabs on the remains of the U-TIC Organization which was responsible for the Miltian Conflict. Its military divisions have since been largely decommissioned, and it largely focuses on civilian corporations, a model proven to work, clearly, by the fact that, in its short existence, it has become one of the galaxy's ten most successful organizations, and it consists of a colony with a focal point on the starship, Durandal, which can dock into the colony and become a tower at its center. Another, more secret side of the Foundation, however, is that they keep a hold on the Zohar Emulators, so as to prevent them from being used as they were during the Miltian Conflict.
In large part, Jr. is the captain of the Durandal and continued to keep up surveillance on U-TIC through to the point where the chief of Vector's First Division, Shion Uzuki, was brought aboard the ship by the crew of the salvage ship, Elsa. From there, he brought them to the Foundation so that they could all manage to go from there to where they needed to; however, while on the Kukai Foundation, the Galaxy Federation declared war on them, pinning the destruction of their warship, Woglinde, on the Foundation; to prove their innocence, Jr. joined Shion and company in diving into Encephalon via KOS-MOS to obtain her black box, that would show the exact events of the Woglinde's destruction. From here, however, the Song of Nephilim (a pyramid space station) is activated and the Gnosis converge on the Kukai Foundation; as they were evacuating the civilians of the Foundation to prevent them from being harmed in the inevitable attack, MOMO was kidnapped by Albedo, sending Jr. into a rage to get her back. Upon saving MOMO, however, they discovered that Albedo had read hidden data stored within her, and had summoned Proto Merkabah to destroy the Federation fleet and was aiming to next attack the planet of Second Miltia. In order to stop this, Jr., along with Shion's group, went into the space station to destroy it. Following its destruction, they were forced into landing on Second Miltia, as they were already within its gravity field.
Upon arriving at Second Miltia, the group heads their separate ways, Jr. bidding farewell to MOMO and Ziggy, as they were to go to meet up with MOMO's mother, as well as bidding adieu to Shion, KOS-MOS, and Allen, who were to head to Vector. In the meantime, he and chaos explored the city, eventually running into Shion again and then, later, meeting with her older brother. Shortly after this, they decided to go look in on the analysis being run on MOMO, which were interrupted by a fail-safe that Albedo had placed in her when he had kidnapped her. To prevent him from getting all of the information, MOMO voluntarily shut her own mind down, causing the rest of the group to decide to dive into her in order to save her.
Inside of MOMO, they saw the events of Jr.'s past, however, including his time with Sakura Mizrahi; they face off with Albedo, Jr. being saved from releasing his Red Dragon Mode by MOMO's intervention, and, from there, they split with Allen, Shion, and KOS-MOS again, reuniting once more when Shion and Allen attempt to get into Old Miltian space but are cut off. Together, they launch an attack on the organization Ormus, which was behind U-TIC, before heading into Old Miltia, where they head into the remains of Labyrinthos, U-TIC's stronghold from the Miltian Conflict. Here, they learn that it was MOMO's father, Joachim Mizrahi (deemed by all as the madman who destroyed Miltia) who had put Miltia into the Abyss to prevent U-DO from awakening, thus saving everyone that he possibly could; they also learn how Ormus manipulated both him and the entire situation.
Further in, they find the mangled forms of two Realians, set there as a safeguard in order to maintain the original Zohar that is still on Miltia; they are then interrupted by Ormus' Patriarch, who tries to summon U-DO with the Zohar, but Jr. fires along with KOS-MOS in an attempt to stop him. However, they are forced to retreat as Miltia becomes the Omega system, which they enter to stop the crazed man. Upon finding him, however, they are unable to do anything as Albedo steps in to take the Zohar for himself, only to be defeated. Upon defeating the Patriarch, Jr. and the others discover that Albedo lives, and has transformed the Omega System into a space-time anomaly. Deciding that it was finally time to settle things with his brother, Jr. headed off after him alone to stop him, finally defeating him (as far as he knew) for good in the end.
One year later, Jr. had learned of the return of his father, Dr. Yuriev, and was also still in his position as the second in command of the Kukai Foundation; he continued his work in sorties to keep Ormus and its Immigrant Fleet from doing anything too out-of-hand. On one such sortie, they lose the Elsa as it is pulled into an anomaly. In attempts to rescue the ship and its crew, Jr. takes the Durandal to Fifth Jerusalem, where he and the others again meet up with Shion and join up to rescue KOS-MOS from the research facility where she is to be scrapped; during this rescue mission, he discovered that his father was involved in the creation of a weapon known as Omega. Upon saving her, they return to where the Elsa was lost. Here, they land on Rennes-le-Château, a floating continent surrounded by hyperspace. From going through, they lose control of the Vessels of Anima on their E.S. units after battling with the Blue Testament, and Jr. discovers that Albedo is also still alive. However, with the loss of their E.S. units, they are forced into a cave leading to a tomb that they discover holds the E.S. names. However, they are attacked by T-elos, the android created to replace KOS-MOS, and KOS-MOS is 'killed' before the hypersphere contracts, taking everyone within with it.
They awaken on the Miltia of fifteen years in the past, shortly before the Miltian Conflict. In going through the events again, they discover the hidden truths behind the Conflict, as well as who was truly involved in everything that happened and what roles there were. However, this also led to the discovery of Shion's fiancé, Kevin, as one of the Testaments and that Shion has the power to convey her will to U-DO. However, not trusting Kevin, Jr. shot at him to keep him from taking Shion from them, providing cover fire while Jin and Allen told KOS-MOS to take Shion and run. Just before the entire facility collapsed, the Elsa arrived, and they boarded, leaving the hypersphere and returning to their 'normal time' from out of Shion's consciousness of the past.
It's upon this return out of the hypersphere that Jr. was pulled into Econtra.
Sample Journal Entry: The hell?!
Dammit, I thought we were getting out of that hypersphere, not getting thrown into another one! And this place is even more depressing than the last one.
Man, where the heck is everyone?! How did I even get thrown out of the Elsa? This is too crazy; it looks so ...
... I don't know, a cross between the Kukai Foundation and, well, anywhere else nowadays. Weird.
Damn. I don't have time to be dealing with this; I need to find everyone else and get the heck out of here. Mary and Shelley must be freaking out, and who knows what's goin' through Gaignun's head about all of this.
And, man, what a greeting these guys gave ...
Eh, at least my Makarovs are just fine, so that's something. And if I look around long enough, I'm sure I'll find someone familiar here; just gotta keep it cool until then.
Sample Roleplay: He wasn't used to being nervous. In fact, he really had no reason to be nervous. But he still was.
He blamed it, of course, on the fact that it was all a brand new experience to him; sure, he'd hit on girls before. He did it all the time. But he'd never actually taken one out before, largely due to his own physical deficiencies. Anyone who didn't know who he was would likely find it very strange to see him out with someone.
However, with MOMO, it was different, Jr. had decided. He'd thought, at first, that the attraction had just been lingering feelings for Sakura at first, and that had been enough to keep him away. But there were enough differences between the two that he'd been able to determine well enough that he wasn't just displacing his love for Sakura onto MOMO.
Shaking his head, he grinned, placing his hands behind his head as he walked. It was interesting enough to think that he would be going on a date. He hadn't really figured out where they would go or anything like that, of course, but he supposed that they could come up with ideas easily enough. Not as though there weren't plenty of places in the Kukai Foundation, after all, and since it was still early enough, they could even head for the beach for a little while, if MOMO felt like it.
Hey, it'll be great, anyway! 'Cause it's just the two of us, and there's nothing goin' wrong right now, anyway. Grinning again, he paused outside of the girl's door and knocked. Yeah. It'll be just fine for today. And maybe longer than that, too.
Did you read the rules? Yes!
