Have you tried using bobbin weaving to make a four-strand whipcord? it's a fun social activity (needs two people unless you're really coordinated, can be done with four people) and makes incredibly strong lacings. I haven't tried it with ribbon yet, but using different colors of cotton string and varied patterns of weaving can make some beautiful designs.
