History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: Little is known about the life of Fuyuki Suzuhara before he became the angel Raphael. Even some parts after that are mysterious, as it's never explained why he lost one of his wings. It is known, however, that he left behind a little sister named Natsumi. It is her wish to see him one more time that brings about Raphael's first appearance in the series. When he appears to Natsumi, he tells her that she needs to move on. After this, there are only two other people (both of whom are training to become angels) who can see him. He's invisible to everyone else.

Most of the time, Raphael resides in heaven and teaches at an institution to train future angels. It was during his time teaching there that he met a student named Mikael. At some point while he was teaching Mikael, Raphael took a special liking to him. More specifically, he took a special liking to flustering him with innuendo. Eventually, the two became lovers. Unfortunately, Raphael had the bad habit of taking off and leaving Mikael alone multiple times without seeming to care how it would hurt him.

After Mikael returned to the normal world he began assisting a girl named Noelle who also wanted to become an angel. Raphael showed up once more, and convinced him that they should move into an apartment together across the street from Noelle's home in order to keep an eye on her. For awhile, things were almost idyllic. However, as Mikael became more and more obsessed with his mission to become an angel, things took a dark turn. Raphael did not approve of the person he saw his student becoming, but at no time did he make a move to try and control his actions. He allowed Mikael to find out for himself the consequences of his decisions, and simply gave him small hints along the way that he was welcome to ignore.

The end of the series finds Raphael returning to heaven and the Angel School. When Mikael pursues him and asks him why he is leaving, he informs him that he has no more to teach the younger man. This time, Mikael insists on going with Raphael, rather than allowing him to leave him alone again.

Point in Canon: After the end of the last episode.

Character Personality: Normally when it comes to angels, one pictures an ethereal being whose attitude is stoic and solemn. Raphael is, at first glance, neither of these things. Rather, he is incredibly rugged in personality; resembling a prankster college student more so than a supposedly heavenly creature. Most of the time he acts mellow, lounging about lazily or playing his guitar while singing horribly off-key. His favorite pastime, however, is teasing Mikael. Sometimes it's as innocent as teleporting from one section of the room to another and making the younger man chase him, and sometimes he rather blatantly flirts with him using rather dirty phrases. One would think he was the sort that hasn't a worry in the world, especially since he seems to be in a constant state of amusement at everything about life. Even in situations where he's being asked to be serious, he just can't resist a wisecrack or two.

There is, however, a more sober side to Raphael. Though he never says so outright, he seems to have some regrets about his choice to become an angel. While is does try and be happy as he can with the outcome he chose, there are aspects of being able to interact and live amongst humans that he misses. He attempts once or twice to relay these feelings to Mikael in his own subtle way, trying to get him to think deeper about why he wants to be an angel and taking the sacrifices it involves into account. There's a definite sense of melancholy that occasionally peeks out from behind Raphael's laid-back facade. He is much wiser than he outwardly appears, and there is a being quite similar to the common perception of angels buried under the trickster surface after all.

Character Plans: Raphael is not the sort to freak out, so chances are he'll be more curious about Siren's Pull than worried or afraid. He's the type that figures everything will work out for the better eventually, so will not spend much time fretting over how to escape and instead enjoying the ability to interact with lots of people again. I can imagine he will also try and help people out when he can, as it's part of being an angel. Also, of course, he will show his mischievous side as well.

First Person Sample

[The video starts off rather oddly, with Raphael's head taking up most of the screen. The odd part would be the fact his head is upside-down. As he pulls the NV back a little farther from himself, it's clear this is because he's hanging by his legs from a light post.]

Oi! Is this the Demon World? I didn't think it would be so modernized. Seems to be the right level of dark and grungy, though! Tsk tsk. You demons really should take more pride in your home. And all these monsters running around attacking people! What a mess.

[With a dramatic sigh he flips himself back up the right way, perching on the light post much like a giant bird.]

I really hope this doesn't get me in trouble at work. It wouldn't look good for me to not show up considering I've been away on paid vacation until now. That place will fall apart without me, you know.

[There's a scream from off-screen, and the suddenness causes Raphael to cringe slightly. His smile doesn't diminish, however, and he gives a little wink to the camera.]

Well, can't get in too much trouble if I work while I'm away, right? I'd better take care of that. Later!

Everyone could see him.

It was strange that, of all the weird things this new place had to offer, it was this that shocked Raphael the most. Not that he let it show. That just wasn't his style. Instead, when people stared at his wing or his halo he would give them a cheery wave and a greeting. Acting as if he was used to it all. Internally, of course, he puzzled as to why this place was different; why it didn't seem to obey the rules that had become his reality from the moment he'd become an angel. There was a small thrill to it, but at the same time in the back of his mind he wondered if this was an ominous sign.

Since he'd arrived, most of his time had been spent exploring as much of the city as he could. While now and again he would fly to accomplish this, he found himself taking a small pleasure in walking and seeing the sights from the point of view of most of the inhabitants.

As he made his way down the sidewalk in the middle class territory with all these thoughts in his head, he happened to spot a couple sharing a private moment on a park bench. The sight brought a small, wistful smile to his face. At first, he marveled at the human ability to find love even in the direst of conditions. Even though they were trapped in this hellish place, here they were giggling and making out as if everything was fine. Then, his mind drifted elsewhere. It drifted to his own silly lover back home.

He didn't much mind this unexpected trip -- he had an eternity, after all. All the same, he found himself wondering how Mikael was faring on his own.

The angel didn't get very long to ponder, however. As the bright sun departed the orange sky, the haunting sound of the evening's siren filled the air. Raphael watched the young couple flee in a panic, taking off in the direction of the nearest apartment buildings. Their moment of normalcy shattered.

For his part, Raphael took wing and got himself to the highest possible perch. From there, he could keep his eye on things and quickly get to anyone who needed assistance fighting the monsters that were already creeping out from their hiding places.
