The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease (actually very informative, written by a concerned parent.  But well-written and backed up by loads of research for the past twenty years.)

I've read a few books by Perrotta (I think it's the same guy anyway) and really enjoyed them, so I'll have to check out The Abstinence Teacher.

P.S. I think my reading goal topped out in the mid-30s, too. I'm already behind schedule for this year, so we'll see what happens.
