I loved The City & the City, though not as much as I liked THE SCAR. The Scar takes a little while to get going but once it rolls it slaloms; knowing what I know about your tastes, I think you would be much happier reading The Scar.

I can't speak of Perdido Street Station; haven't read it yet.

I can speak about his YA book, Un Lun Dun. To my surprise, I hated it. Its cleverness wasn't amusing and its cascade of events never made me care.

If I pick up another of his books, I'll give THE SCAR a try. Thanks for the tip!

I'm still a bit surprised why he's so revered, but... to each his own, I guess. :)

Whenever I ask other people why they love China Mieville, a bit more than half say PERDIDO STREET STATION and a bit less than half say THE SCAR.

Good to know, Rob. I have a knack for picking up the exact wrong book and then judging the author by it. I have never read any of the J.R.R. Tolkien books because I picked up The Silmarillion first... and hated it. It ruined me for Tolkien.
