Any know any info here on services (or learning to do it yourself)?

I use GetDataBack but another one that's free is Recuva.

Otherwise doing it yourself is quite hard, if it's worse than that.

Think it's worth a shot for me to try those? What with not being able to see the drive whatsoever.

Depends, sometimes they can dig it out sometimes not, depends on what the "not seeing drive" problem is.
