So, there were lots of things that could distract Rinoa right now -- like calling Zone for updates, which he didn't have any, thanks a lot, Zone, or working on a gift basket thing for Jono, because he had a face now and that meant he needed a gift basket with edible things and other things that you could use when you had a mouth. But she didn't ( Read more... )

General Caraway was NOT PLEASED.

He got up and shut the door of his office, in order to muffle the angry thumps of his secretary cleaning out her desk. Now he'd have to add finding, hiring, and training a new secretary to his already monstrous to-do list. Had Deling had these kinds of problems?

It didn't matter how hard it was going to be. It hurt him enough when he made Rinoa cry. Someone else doing it -- in his name, no less -- was unforgivable.

He dialed Rinoa's number his own damn self, and pulled his notes on Timber out of his filing cabinet while it rang.

Oh. Sure. Now her phone was ringing.

It wasn't going to be him. She wasn't sure why she cared if it was him. He told his secretary not to let her through, after not calling her himself for a whole month. But it didn't matter because it had only been a few minutes and it wasn't going to be him. And she hated him that much more for getting her hopes up like this, and she hated whoever it was on the phone for being mean.

So when she pulled the phone up to her face, the only actual response she could manage was an exasperated, "What?!"

Caraway cleared his throat and took a deep breath. He was still FURIOUS, but not at Rinoa, and he couldn't let her think that he was angry at her, not now...

"Sorceress," he greeted her formally. "I apologize for the rude reception you were just treated to. Rest assured, those responsible have been sacked."

Oh. It was him. Was that -- was that supposed to make her feel better? Because it didn't. Really. Honest. Mostly.

"General," she said. She sounded haughty. She hoped to, anyway. And if she sniffled, it was a distortion of the line and those stupid allergies acting up again and anyway, she didn't care if he ever called her. At all. "I was told you were not to be disturbed. I thought perhaps, since it has been four weeks, you might have seen fit to give me some sort of an update, but perhaps you're busy."

Angry. Not hurt. Angry. Could he tell?
