So, my host mother is essentially an aristocrat left over from the Austro-Hungarian empire. She and her husband are both Hungarian, as is their housekeeper. Clearly, they are *loaded* with cash. They have a lovely, and fairly large, apartment on an upper floor of a building in a fashionable commercial district. They seem fairly traditional: ( Read more... )

Wow, that sounds... impressive. Awkward, too.
How are you moving around the house without seeing your host family? School, I guess?
And there are two of you in the same host family?

... not at all like my experience, methinks. ;)

Impressive and awkward...that should cover it. I am out a great deal, with classes and such. The beginning of the program, in particular, is full of tours and orientations, as well as the usual courses beginning, so yesterday I left the house at 9:30 am and returned after 11 pm. Hence not seeing my hosts.

I am living with Abby, a senior music major and really nice woman. We were matched because we both really wanted a piano in the house, and the Garzulys will let us play theirs. They host for a number of different programs, but always two girls, usually music students.

...our experiences, I think, will be vastly different, because I am in Austria and you were in Japan, if for no other reasons. :) Hopefully they will be similar in both being good!

Glad to hear that you made it all right. It sounds like you had an interesting day. I eagerly await more news. Let us know how things go, and if you're able to hit it off with them!

Lots of hugs,
Emmanuel

Well what makes one person happy may not another. Just like one persons life may not be what the other one wants. I wanted to be young when I married and have all my kids done with by the time I was 25(well 23 now) But that is clearly not the path that should be taken by everyone, and it should not be forced on anyone either. I do hope you enjoy you time over there.

That is certainly true--there are all kinds of ways to live a good and happy life. I think the more I keep that in mind, the easier it will be to adjust to being over here.
