We are debating whether to have a 3rd, and now we're in the US this actually rather worries me. I had midwife births with both of mine in England, even with a birth that was having a difficult labour, I had a midwife up until they decided I would need a c-section and she still stayed with me through the section and long enough to make sure I was alright breastfeeding even though her shift had ended a couple of hours before. With my second, even though it was technically "high risk" because of the previous section, I still had midwife care, with an OB nearby, but the OB only checked on me occasionally and did not intrude. I am sure that I managed to have a vaginal birth the second time because of the support of midwives.
I have a feeling if I have a 3rd, I'm going to have a fight on my hands to even have a chance at a birth I want.
I think you if do your research and stick to your guns then you will definitely have the birth you want! I had the birth I wanted in a hospital and while the nurses acted like I was nuts or something and the doctors (who are residents) were AMAZED that I did it w/out drugs. They could not believe it and I seriously think I made their day being able to witness a natural birth. I had a doula and she made a HUGE difference. I wouldn't have been able to do it w/out her because the nurses just wanted to keep me in bed.
You have to fight for everything in this country it seems like.
I've actually considered just staying at home if I have another and go into labour. I don't seem to have any problem going into labour, and I think all my troubles started when I went into hospital with Andrew. I should have stayed home. And with Abby I crumbled too fast with asking for an epidural, even though it did absolutely nothing with Andrew, and again it did virtually nothing. I definitely do not want another epi.
Yay! I hope you get to experience birth one day! It is amazing! I cried my eyes out w/each of those births because I knew exactly what they were feeling!
Right on! I've been curious about this movie since I heard about it several months ago. I'm so glad that now I get to see it! If it weren't for our Bradley Classes we took, I probably would have had a typical American delivery. The class opened my eyes to all the number of choices we actually have for our children. I do believe individuals in the medical community have good intentions. However as an industry, they have achieved creating standards/normalcies and counsel to those. I believe the result is that people do not know they have choices they can make - that they can be an active participant in their health. Thank you for sharing!
