The Killers are the epitome of everything I've ever wanted in a band.

[The Killers - Hot Fuss]

Label: Island Records
Release Date: June 15, 2004
Overall Score: 8/10

On their debut release Hot Fuss, The Killers blend the sounds of such bands as The Strokes and Interpol with the sounds of classic favorites like The Cure and Depeche Mode to create a style that is oddly addicting and all their own. On Hot Fuss, The Killers make use of catchy bass lines, cleverly placed drum rhythms and lyrics that seem to suck you into the story to formulate an amazing debut. Hot Fuss drips with sexability and a sound so catchy that the songs will be stuck in your head for weeks.

Jenny Was a Friend of Mine is the perfect opening song for this album, as the whirl of the helicopter prepares the listener for what he's about to be exposed to. Crashing drums, one of the catchiest bass lines I've heard on any release this year, and sparkling synth tones ring in the album. Lead singer Brandon Flowers' voice shines on this one, as does the emotion exhibited in his vocals, especially during the chorus.

Somebody Told Me is one of the catchiest songs on the album, and my favorite song on Hot Fuss. The melody of Flowers' vocals is brilliant throughout, particularly during the chorus with the tongue-in-cheek line "Somebody told me you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year, it's not confidential, I've got potential..." Emotion and energy only build throughout the song, coming to climax in the final chorus.

All These Things That I've Done is brilliant, showcasing the band's diversity and opening with a slow piano line before kicking up the pace for the first verse. The verses seem very remniscient of The Strokes for about the first two and a half minutes before an absolutely genius breakdown. Everything cuts out except for one guitar that serves to keep the rhythm until Flowers begins chanting "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier." When what seems to be a gospel choir joins him, the listener is left completely surprised but immediately pleased by the song's extreme sweetness and soul.

Overall, Hot Fuss is one of the most solid debut releases I've heard recently, and The Killers have a sound that won't allow them to simply fade away. This is a band that ought only to improve with age, and they have the potential to remain in the spotlight for years to come.
