“Ow!”
“Stay out of there,” Elizabeth said firmly as she sat her pen down after rapping him sharply on the hand.
John rubbed his sore knuckles as he moved back around to the front of his desk. “What’s in there?” he asked sourly. “Hidden stash of something?”
“None of your business,” she shot back primly, her eyes resting firmly on her laptop screen and continued her typing.
He sank down into the chair in front of her desk. “Come on, Elizabeth,” he nearly whined. “You’ve got my bouncy-ball in there.”
Elizabeth looked up. “I know I do. And you’re not getting back for a while. I’m not eager to have to dodge it during meetings or listen to Rodney complain about you not paying attention.”
John folded his arms in front of him and smirked. “It’s got to be more than that,” he mused. “What else is in that drawer?”
She sighed, clearly exasperated with his continued harping on the topic. Stopping her typing, Elizabeth took out a tiny key from another drawer in her desk. She then unlocked the drawer in question and opened it. She reached in, pulled out the ball and showed it to him before tossing it back in. She showed him a myriad of other objects, such as her father’s pocket watch, a little unusually-shaped crystal Carson had given to her for her second birthday on Atlantis, and a few other things.
She hesitated briefly, her hand obviously resting on something else, and then she slowly pulled out a red, green, and white box. John blinked in surprise.
“Peppermint candy canes?” he asked incredulously. “That’s what you’re so protective of? Candy canes?”
A faint blush crept up her cheeks and she returned the box to the drawer. “I loved them when I was a kid, and Mom sent me a couple boxes this year, since I won’t be home for Christmas this year,” she explained somewhat sheepishly.
Christmas. Oh yeah. Living on a world where the climate was fairly steady and unchanging made him sometimes forget various seasonal holidays. It was December first, he recalled. The holiday was less than a month away.
“Oh,” he said finally. Trying to cover up the idea that was starting to take root in his head, he grinned. “Big candy cane fan, were you?”
Elizabeth smiled slightly. “Yes,” she admitted. “Got it from my father. He loved them too.” There was a slight wistfulness in her tone.
John nodded thoughtfully, and then stood up. “Well, I’m going to go find something else to do when Rodney starts yapping on and on in the meeting later.” Then he hurried out, laughing slightly when he heard her say his name indignantly behind him.
He made a beeline for the transporter. He needed to make a request from Earth for Christmas.
