She hated her life. He knew that.

She attempted to hide her disgust with forced smiles and nervous laughter. She would hold his hand and rub his back, and never once voiced her unhappiness.

One would think she was the perfect wife.

But no, she hated it. That was undeniable.

He supposes it really wasn’t her fault. They were young when they married; she was at the ripe age of 17, young and adventurous--and four months pregnant. He was only 21 and not really ready for a family, but he had been raised that you clean up your messes and look after your own. And besides, once he warmed up to the idea, a child didn’t really seem that bad.

So naturally, he proposed to Anna. He opened a black velvet box over a cheap pasta dinner, and immediately, he could see the hesitation dash across her face.

He had wanted to pull the velvet box away. Wanted so badly to take those words back. Anything to remove that look from her face; that caged, cornered look.

But, as quickly as it had appeared, it was gone. She smiled widely and took the ring, muttering dazedly that yes, she would.

She was disappointed when they moved into the trailer park, and relieved when she miscarried. But like a good wife, she never said it out loud.

At first, Brandon thought she would adjust. But a year later, he’s finally admitted to himself that she hated her life. And she always will.

He never blamed her, though. She was 18, after all. She should have been partying and drinking. Going to bed with strange men and spending her paychecks on clothes, not the water bill.

They had come to an unspoken mutual agreement. He took care of her, and she tolerated her tepid life.

But when he wakes up on a typical Thursday morning and finds her side of the bed empty, he is not really surprised.

He is just amazed it took that long.
