When Nobuko Kotani, a.k.a. Nobuta, left her house earlier that day, she didn’t really have a particular place in mind to go to, just that she felt like going out. For one thing, she didn’t really have much to do at her place. Sometimes, she and (Uehara) Mariko would go to the mall and shop but the girl had been busy lately with her boyfriend, a new guy named Ariake Taisuke.

It’s during those kinds of moments that she finds herself missing Shuji and Akira.

Surprisingly though, the place, a park she used to frequent in the past, she found her feet bring her to was in no way connected to either Shuji or Akira. It was a place connected to the first male friend, if she could call him that, she ever had, one she met right before she transferred school, way before she was even produced. It was actually that guy who made her want to have confidence in herself.

His name was Mimura Takuya and she met him in that park.

The circumstances of her meeting him then isn’t too far from her current situation. She had left house then and found herself wandering, her thoughts lost in wind. And then she saw herself right in front of that park with the park seeming to call her towards it. Having had nothing better to do, she simply went along with that tiny voice in her head and entered the park, settling herself on an empty bench she found there.

A few feet in front of her, a few kids right around her age seemed to be enjoying the afternoon as they chatted and laughed with each other. Even if she wanted to, which she did because they really looked like they were having fun, Nobuta wouldn’t, couldn’t make herself join the group. She neither had the guts nor the confidence to step up to complete strangers even if the purpose is to gain friends.

In the end, she contented herself to simply sitting there to watch completely guaranteed that no one would bother her there.

That’s when she first heard his voice.

“Why don’t you join them?” a male voice suddenly came from behind.

The voice made her jump. Not only was it completely unexpected, the voice also came as foreign to her. She felt even more self-conscious with her hair falling to her face when she turned around and saw a good-looking guy standing right next to her bench, his hands in his pocket, as he looked at the kids with an air of self-confidence Nobuta had never quite been capable of mustering during that time.

“E-eh?” was all she managed to say.

She saw the guy turn to her and smile and Nobuta felt a catch rise to her throat. Looking at him in side-view, it was already pretty evident that he’s good-looking, but a view of him up front made it completely certain that he is an ikemen. The knowledge did not help one bit in boosting her confidence. And so did his next words.

“Can I sit?” he asked.

So nervous she was then that she didn’t trust herself to speak. Instead, she simply nodded her head and looked away. But he wasn’t done it apparently and what he said next surprised her even more.

“I’m Takuya Mimura,” he said. “You are?”

She wasn’t expecting the question, nor was she expecting that when she turned to look at the guy in shock that she’d see him looking at her like she’s something interesting, to say the least. Still, she tried her best to make her tongue move.

“N-nobuko Ko-kotani…” she managed to croak out.

“Nobuta?” he asked, the amusement visible in his voice most probably due to the name he thought he heard as he leaned closer to her.

“N-no! No!” she shook her head as her cheeks started to flare. “Nobuko,” she said, a little more clearly this time, turning even to face the guy for additional clarity. Somehow, it ended up feeling like a mistake though since she felt her cheeks flare when she saw him looking at her intently.

“Hi Nobuko-san!” the guy grinned and Nobuta forced out a smile. She was so nervous she couldn’t help but allow her hair to drop further down to hide her face. She was also way too hesitant to accept the hand that the guy had offered for her to shake. Still, manners made her reach out her own to hold his.

The action, though, prompted the guy to ask “Ne, are you all right? You’re hands are cold!”

Nobuta practically felt her heart beating like crazy even before the guy said that. With him taking notice of it, she felt it even more. She also felt her cheeks flare. Immediately, she withdrew her hand.

“I’m nervous,” she found herself admitting after a while, not really sure why she felt like she needed to explain herself when usually she’d just let it go and let the other person think what he or she wants to think of her.

“Eh? Why?” she heard him ask. There was no note of amusement on his voice though, something she almost always hears whenever her confidence, or lack of it, becomes the topic. What she heard was simply just that of curiosity.

“I… I don’t have confidence the way you do,” she admitted to the guy without even turning to look at him.

For a while, he said nothing. She thought it’d be one of those times when a person suddenly lectures her about her appearance and stuff like that, a common yet rather tiring thing to hear, especially when she hears it coming from people who obviously exude such self-confidence.

It was therefore to her surprise when she heard something else. So surprised she was that she ended up turning to face the guy again. Takuya’s eyes were focused on those kids playing nearby but his thoughts seemed like it was somewhere entirely else.

“You know what I learned about confidence?” he started. “It’s something we show others even if in truth we don’t feel it in ourselves.”

Nobuta felt her eyebrows crease. Somehow, she understood what he meant but still, she felt confused by it. Rather, she felt confused on how someone looking like him would feel something like it.

He must have felt her gaze on him though since he turned around and showed him a bright smile. And then he did something that surprised her a great deal.

He reached out his hand to tuck the loose hair that was hiding most of her face behind her ear. She was startled by the action but for some reason, she did not reel back.

When Takuya Mimura smiled, she felt like smiling too.

Nobuta found herself smiling as she recalled that fateful meeting. A few minutes after that, Takuya had excused himself when another guy, a shorter one but good-looking just the same, one he called “Taro-kun”, called for him.

It wasn’t their last meeting though. A few days after, when Nobuta found herself in that same park, Takuya sat next to her again. They just chatted most of the time, but Nobuta always found herself enjoying those little talks.

After a couple more meetings, she didn’t get to see him anymore. For one thing, she had started in her new school and had been quite caught in the circumstances that led to Shuji and Akira ‘producing’ her. She didn’t know how to get hold of the guy too since they neither talked about their own schools or houses and she also never had the guts to ask for his number, same way, he never asked for hers. But still, the thought of the guys pops up in her mind.

She had just heaved a deep sigh then, raising her head to look at the gradually darkening sky, when an old familiar voice suddenly spoke from behind her and she almost jumped out of the bench she had occupied.

“I hope I’d see you here again,” he said.

There was already a smile on her lips when she turned her head and saw Takuya Mimura there. He remained handsome, and if possible, even more. The couple of years that was added to his age didn’t seem to carry quite a weight yet it did have its effects. He wasn’t too boyish anymore.

But still handsome. Yep, still handsome.

“Takuya-san!” she could only cheer.

Takuya smiled as he walked around the bench in almost an exact replica of what he did when the two of them first met.

”It’s been a while, Nobuta-san,” he said as he did.

Nobuta found herself smiling. Weirdly, she also felt a warm feeling enveloping her heart when it became evident that eh too remembered her, or at least, her name.

“I stop by here every now and then to see if I’d get to see you again,” he continued. “I was almost loosing hope.”

“You were looking for me?” Nobuta gasped. She didn’t expect to hear that. A part of her, that part that still harbors that insecurity she had in the past, worried that he’d forgotten all about her.

“Yep,” Takuya nodded. “I’m glad I was wrong though.”

She didn’t really know what to say as she felt conscious of how her heart started beating so fast once again. She simply smiled.

“Looks like you’ve changed quite since the last time I saw you,” he smiled.

“Not really,” she chuckled rather nervously.

“You have!” he said. “You’re a little less fidgety. You’re much more confident now,” he observed.

Nobuta really didn’t know what to respond to that so she simply said “You look like you’ve changed quite a bit as well.”

“Not so much,” Takuya shrugged with a smile.

After a while, neither of them spoke as they simply sat there. it didn’t seem to bother Nobuta though who simply felt glad that he’s there next to her and that she got to see him again.

“Yep, you’re definitely more confident now,” Takuya’s voice broke the silence.

Nobuta turned to look at him just as he turned to her. And then he asked “You must already have a boyfriend then?”

“No,” Nobuta found herself replying immediately, shaking her head as she looked away. She’s not sure why but for some reason, she just felt herself blushing at the question. Curiously, she also felt like she had to make it clear to him that she doesn’t have one as her heart started to race again.

The strong beating of her heart almost deafened her that she almost didn’t hear what Takuya said next.

“I’m relieved.”

“Huh?” she asked, turning around to look curiously at the guy. Takuya shook his head and said “Nothing,” but Nobuta thought she saw him go red around the neck.

She didn’t pursue the question though and Takuya didn’t say anything for a while once again. Moments later, Nobuta realized that they were sitting quite closely to one another, closer than they have ever done before.

She couldn’t help but smile.

a little bonus drabble because it took quite a long time

“You’re Nobuta-chan?” the guy, Yamada Taro exclaimed in amazement before Takuya could even finish his introductions.

They were in a family restaurant near the park where Takuya had invited her to go to after their meeting at the park. Apparently, he was going to meet a friend there.

She remembers the guy actually. She’d seem him before when he called Takuya that first time they met. She must admit; he looked more handsome up close than he did all those years ago.

“Yes,” she found herself nodding, not really knowing what to say or how to respond to the guy’s enthusiastic meeting of her. “Nice to meet you…”

“I’m Yamada Taro, you can just call me Taro instead,” the guy said. Before Nobuta, or even Takuya could say a thing, Taro continued “I’ve heard a lot about you.”

“You did?” Nobuta exclaimed in surprise as she but the guy didn’t seem to notice. He was too busy glaring at the shorter guy.

“Yeah!” Taro continued, apparently not even concerned that his friend, a much taller guy, is glaring down at him. “This guy wouldn’t stop talking about you! He even asked me too look around here hoping that you lived close by when he didn’t see you again a couple of years ago. He was losing hope that you’d see each other again!”

Takuya cleared his throat warningly but Yamada seemed to have decided that he’d just ignore him.

“I think you made quite an impression to him,” he told her.

Nobuta found herself blushing furiously at what the guy implied especially since Takuya was not denying the claim. He simply called “Taro-kun…” warningly but nothing more.

Nobuta even saw him go really red at the face as he sneaked quite a sheepish look at her. She felt her own cheeks flare too.

In front of them, Yamada Taro chuckled out loud.
