I've just come back from seeing "The Kings Speech," and it was brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! I haven't enjoyed a movie so much in ages.
The cast were all outstanding in their roles, but Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush really stood out in this film. It can't be easy to put yourself in the shoes of a monarch but Colin Firth was absolutely believable as a king. What made his performance truly outstanding is not just that you believe he is a king, but that you see him as an ordinary man who has a family with cares and burdens. He is entirely sympathetic and you can't help but root for him the whole way through. He played his part with intelligence, humour, dignity and humanity & Geoffrey Rush no less so. I fully believe that Colin Firth is well overdue for an Oscar and I sincerely hope that he wins one for this performance. If you told someone the plot I'm sure they'd look at you (as my co-workers did) and say, who would find a movie about a King who stutters interesting? But it is! And it has as much to do with the writing as the cast. I think what I loved the most was that nothing was overdone or overly dramatised. The dramtic moments when they come have a much bigger impact because they are quiet and come from the heart. This is a man who is overcoming his fears, fears that have dogged him his whole life, who is discovering his real self and what he is capable of in a world where everyone, even his family, have dictated who he is and who he must be to be accepted.
I really can't recommend this movie highly enough. If you get a chance to see it go!
