Guess what?  I stretched the meaning of size, but hey, it works!!! :)

Thanks to the ever awesome Kastari for the fabulous beta.  (and the subtile hint about the title...) :)

41, 435.

The number stared at Laura impassibly. She sat in the leather chair in front of her white board, a glass of ambrosia in her hand, glaring back at it.

What remained of humanity.

Ship wise, New Caprica had cost them; the fleet would never be whole again. But on those ship...  The size of their population had decreased enough that she felt it in her bones.  She'd fought and died for this number, but it kept dwindling. One day, the count would be at zero and they would be extinct.

Laura sighed and took a sip of her drink.  Suddenly, the air around her shifted and she felt Bill’s presence before he walked into the room. He sat down next to her silently, his eyes on her board, too.

“It cost us,” he said.

She hummed in grim agreement.

“We'll rebuild.”

“How?” Her voice was just above a whisper

“The same way we always have.”

Laura nodded, took another sip of her drink, and slipped her free hand into Bill’s. “Time to roll those hard sixes?”

“And maybe we'll get a lucky seven.”

Bill’s thumb caressed hers gently and Laura smiled.

41, 435.

They could start with that.
