I love that you used chess to explore the complexities of their relationship as it grew from an alliance, to friendship, to love.
I especially loved the way you ended it off:
Bill looked grinned at her. “You’re good at that.”
“What, chess?”
“Winning me over.”
Laura looked down at her lap, heat rising in her heart. She then looked up at Bill, a little grin on her face as she reached for his hand. “Lucky me.”

I love the natural way they started the game, and the tentative way they started it, considering the setting/time.
