Fantasy Please!

Jun 17, 2011 22:37

I want to buy some amazing Fantasy books. Adult, YA, juvenile, I don't care. Books like THE LAST UNICORN, or STARDUST, or HOWLS MOVING CASTLE.

So... Any suggestions? Especially if they're as good as the one's I've already mentioned. :D

(Also, I would not object to reading *cough* WIP's that fit this description *winkwink*)

Finnikin of the Rock
Sabriel
I'm trying to read the first 100 Cupboards book but honestly I don't know if I'm going to be able to make it through.
The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley (dragon-fighting teen!)
Alanna: The First Adventure
Game of Thrones
Mistwood
Kushiel's Dart
The Mists of Avalon
Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister
Ella Enchanted

I bought all 3 of the 100 cupboards books at once because my students were reading them and I like to read with them so I can possibly use the themes in my lessons. The first book is nothing special, but I did really like the concept, the second book is much better, and most of my students said they liked the last book as well (not there yet). Some YA doesn't translate as well when adults read them :/ some of the stuff my students were reading was so terrible I couldn't get through the first two chapters (various awful teenage vampire series and bratty girl club/cliquish "books" that were barely 100 pages and so watered down they read more like a sitcom episode than a fully developed story) so I can sympathize :)

My problem with the book is that nothing HAPPENS! And I couldn't visualize the setting or cupboards at all. And the adults were just... crazy. I guess I just see things with adult eyes now :-(

ha! Yes! I think it may have been written with a trilogy in mind, which is not a good excuse but I totally see what you are talking about! My adult eyes have totally ruined a few series for me; city of ember was awesome, the following books were SO preachy to my "adult eyes" that it made me MAD.

Graceling by Kristin Cashore is my favourite YA fantasy novel. I'm rereading it for the third time in a year, if that tells you anything about how much I love it (and I have a very hard time rereading books, usually.) :)

I LOVED that book! And FIRE. And I was waiting for BITTERBLUE which was supposed to release this April, and got pushed back until next year. Super disappointed about that... :(

These are definitely young adult, but:

Beyonders: A World without Heroes
and
Beyonders: Seeds of Rebellion

Are awesome (: They are by Brandon Mull.
Never a dull moment.
