Loom review

I've been toying with the idea of getting another loom for a while now - something that can handle wider pieces than the inkle loom. They have a couple of brands of peg looms in Spotlight, but they are more designed for knitting, and I am not sure if they would be suited for the kinds of things I want to do ( Read more... )

It looks to me like a tapestry loom. Is it? I thought it was too because of what you say about it weaving pieces the size of the loom. As far as the peg looms go, I do have a huge variety of those and the Martha Stewart one too, and they're quite versatile. What I found quite interesting about those, despite the plastic they're made from, is that the weave that comes with some of the stitch techniques is a perfect representation of early knitting for things like socks, leg coverings and the like. Plus, as I can't knit to save my life, I find these quite a bit more interesting and easy to work with, so if I want something quick, no problem.

Yes, I think it is intended as a tapestry loom, or for making small pieces like cushions or purses. However, the end bars are both tensionable, so it's not hard to roll a longer piece around them. It just makes it a bit harder to pull the warp really tight.

Those Spears looms look pretty neat. I never think to look on Ebay for stuff. I don't know why. My dad was a big fan for a while. He got some good camera gear off there.

If it is just bits of wood and a couple of screws why not have a go at making your own. You'd probably just need a small saw and a drill

It's a little bit more than that. Also you want it to be finished properly so it doesn't snag/rub the thread. Probably beyond my fairly basic woodworking skills.

yeah, ebay is probably a better bet. Though since I am avoiding a uni assignment at the moment I might be tempted to give it a try
