I've been thinking about 1.14 a bit. Still not going to rewatch it, since prisons are so not my thing, but I thought about my own reactions, and I think I saw in Gideon's choices something almost opposite to what you see: I saw a kind of courtesy to that woman, allowing her to make her own decision and stick to it, after a lifetime of being bullied into things.
I see; but, culturally speaking, suicide is generally considered to be a reason for serious treatment instead of a valid choice, and, while there might be other interpretation, I sorta stick to this school.
