I've been thinking about a lot of the things you mention, from a slightly different point of view, and I am moved to this thought:
People have astounding capacity, not only to endure oppression and terror, but to rise above it. In no instance that I can think of has any group of humans simply sat down and accepted their position of inferiority. It's hardcoded into the human soul that we are all equal in the eyes of the guy who created us... Science tells us that diamonds are the hardest substance in the world, but that's only because there's no way of testing the soul in the same manner. Souls win over diamonds every time.
I sincerely hope that you and the family are well- is your grandma settled into her new home well? I'll be around Sunday night/Monday morning for the Oscars, so if you have any time, I'd love to chat- miss you lots, though I know how busy you are.
