The reasons *why* are understood but I don't think that anyone is happy with them. ::sniffles::

No, untainted happiness isn't really possible in this situation. :(

Poor Orlando - basically like in witness protection. But I suppose that is what's absolutely needed. And yay for Liam for getting his boy back. I wonder if Vincent would be as successful. But I gather it's been a long long while.

I can't believe it's almost the end!

That's a good comparison. [nod] Although if it really were witness protection, he'd have been resettled somewhere a thousand miles away and wouldn't be allowed even contact with anyone he knew. :( Safer, but... yeah. [sigh]

About Mark and Paul, it's been a couple of years. Even with Thewlis helping -- as Mark Vincent has insisted -- it's a real long-shot. Mark can't not search, though.

Well, I'm certainly happy that Liam got him back, but I've even more heartbroken over how damaged David is. Orlando really is gone forever, just as Liam was musing at the start of this chapter.

Liam wasn't really thinking about it that way, but you're right. [nod] Liam was trying to psych himself up to respond the Right Way for the benefit of anyone who might be looking out a hotel window or something, but I think he still had some idea floating around in his mind -- beyond all sense or reason -- that getting Orlando home, even as David, would be the end of most of the problem, and that from then on it'd just be a matter of not letting David come to the attention of the authorities. He knows better know. :/

So Liam has his boy back (or what's left of him - it will take time to find the remnants...) David will never be able to tell the people he loves (his Family!) who he really is... There's nothing more sad than that!

At least he's safe, even though it will take a lot of time for him to feel safe again and settle in his 'new' life.

On the other hand nothing has changed... What happened to Orlando can happen again to other slaves, who might not be so fortunate to have a Master that wants them back no matter what...

Wonderful heartbreaking bitter sweet chapter hun!
*hugs*

Yes, the basic situation still remains. :( To say nothing of the fact that slavery as an institution still sucks, even if no slave ever got stolen again.

I'm glad you've been enjoying, it, though, even with the remaining sadness -- thanks!

That all makes sense and ties in nicely, but it's terribly sad because Orlando is still 'gone'.

You're right, it is. :/ I did the best I could, but when the situation in a particular setting thoroughly sucks, sometimes the best you can do is the best you can do. [nod]
