I had dinner with Jean Auel in 1984, shortly after Clan of the Cave Bear came out. She was a nice enough lady, but seemed to think her book was high art, when it's really more of what I'd call a good "airplane book", i.e., something to pick up and read and not worry about where you are in the book or if you leave it on the plane.
