Movies for 2011, Part #1.

Jan 16, 2011 01:25

OK, this year I'm not just going to list films, I'm going to endeavour to at least briefly review each of them and give them a score. The scores are for people without enough time to read three sentences: remember, in the tradition of Edge (the greatest magazine on the planet), an average score is 5/10. A really good film would be 7/10. A masterful ( Read more... )

That's fair enough. I think it depends on what you want from a film, your own personal taste, etc.

I actually enjoy The Lost World more than Jurassic Park, even though The Lost World is weirdly paced, scrappy as hell and flailing all over the place, narratively speaking. It just has much funnier dialogue.

I like most of Jurassic Park, but every time I watch it, I skip more and more of the first half of the movie.

The sequels are very messy, but not without a strange charm.

Dave Cake's made the observation that Jeff Goldblum is vastly superior in The Lost World than in Jurassic Park simply because of his dialogue and motivations.

Jurassic Park: "It's all going to fail and go horribly wrong!"
"Why?"
"Oh, er... chaos theory, mathematics, nature finds a way, blah blah."

Lost World: "It's all going to fail and go horribly wrong!"
"Why?"
"Because that's what happened last time."

More fun than Conan the Barbarian, but an inferior film at the same time.

It's true. I always liked the evil god-monster at the end of this one.

It was designed by Carlo Rambaldi, who also designed E.T.

Agree with Jaws, which I only saw for the first time last year and thought was brilliant.

If you want to see the opposite of Jaws, watch Jaws: The Revenge. Hilarious stuff. Michael Caine once got asked if he liked it (since he's in it), and he said "Well, it paid for my house. And I like my house."

Agree with you 100% on Jaws. I say exactly the same thing about Quint's speech to anyone who will stand to hear me say it (again). It's one of those "I watch it at least once a year" films.

Disagree with you 100% about Withnail and I. Can't stand it. Load of boring tosh. But I do note that I am in the minority on that one.

What amazes me about the Quint speech is that apparently Shaw was so drunk he could barely stand when he performed it.

Hadn't heard that before, but if you look into his eyes you can believe it.

To be fair, Shaw spent most of Jaws pretty drunk. He was part of that frightening generation of actors who spent most of their lives in a state of angry inebriation, like Richard Harris and Oliver Reed.

I had to watch "Withnail and I" as soon as I moved to UK!
I haven't tried keeping up with the drinking, though ..

Never keep up with the drinking in Withnail.
