I wonder if when people try to cheer up those of us who are unhappy it's not necessarily to invalidate feelings, but perhaps they themselves don't know how to respond properly; often times people try to cheer someone up because they don't know what else to do, they can't just let the person be because maybe they feel responsible for changing that person's mood/feelings/fixing the melancholy.

Depending on what a friend of mine is upset about, I will try to appease them and attempt to make everything all right. But, that's not because I want to invalidate their feelings, it's because no one wants to see the people they love suffer in any capacity.

Though, I understand the theory behind what you are saying. Sometimes people just need to feel whatever it is they are feeling, whether it's good or bad.
