Archbishop Desmond Tutu

I was watching the Dennis Miller Show on CNBC and he had Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Miller asked the Archbishop about loving the perpetrators as well as the victims. He said that while he tries to love all people he found it often hard to love the perpetrators and wish the best for them. Bono seems to have that affect on people--they meet him and whether or not they know or care about his music, they're really impressed with him as a person. Bono won over Jesse Helms that way, believe it or not. And I was talking with my godfather Jaroslav Pelikan a couple of weeks ago--he'd met Bono recently when they both got honorary degrees from the same school, and he was similarly impressed.

One possible contributing factor--what one thing do Bono, George W. Bush, Jesse Helms, Desmond Tutu, and Jaroslav Pelikan have in common? Answer: They're all very committed Christians. That may have helped them form that bond of personal respect even when there are drastic differences in policy and background.
