ironically I *had* a show at UMass (in 1983)...called The Myth of Progress. the show's slogan was "from Burma to Bach to Beanbag" with fliers that contained imagery of prehistoric animals, fish and chemistry paraphernalia and a handpainted wash of dayglow poster paint...(Beanbag was my other favorite local band that began with B, but they didn't really perform publicly much - in case you were wondering...they were some highschool aged friends). So yeah, it (the show) was alternating tracks of classical and local/alternative music on a powerful 10 watt pirate station that made it to most dorms. (It was WZZZ not WMUA - my boyfriend had a show there from 2am to 6am - mind you he never made it to class much). Most of the callers who called me would just say, "What the fuck are you doing?" but I noticed lots of kids stole my fliers from the campus bulletin boards and put them on their dorm doors for decoration. Apparently they were quite snazzy.
there were about three pirate stations on UMass. All of them were heavily postered/publicized around campus.
why? because we wanted people on campus to listen.
anyhow, it was my understanding that they were make shift radio stations, so I'm thinking that means pirate. maybe my memory is blurred. possible. with a tranmission that reached only the surrounding dorms during good weather, I don't think anyone was too worried about it, but it was fun to dj.
ah...actually you're right. it's not technically *pirate*...and it was probably not 10 watts, but 10 milliwatts. (I guess 10 watts would make it way past campus). I think students called it *pirate* because it wasn't the official station of UMass...and heck, pirate sounds so much cooler!
