Am I the only person in the Western World that is alarmed that we seem to be having a debate about whether torture is acceptable these days? Did I fall through a time hole and its 1588 or something? Even the founding fathers, who were a bit behind when it came to women and people who weren't white, were pretty fucking clear on this.

Shit man, I've been worried about creeping fascism since camouflage became a regular fashion accessory. Let's celebrate militarism! WTF?

Hardly. The progressive talking heads bring it up every night wondering why Prez. Obama is not starting a war crime tribunal RIGHT NOW. And the ultra conservatives whine about Spain while Cheney wanders around saying "We did the right thing, damnitall!"

It makes NO SENSE.

Don't you remember? We fought World War 2 to clear the name of fascism so that when we took it up forty years later, it'd be untouched by the stain of racial murder (and thus clean for exclusively political murder). Then we fought the cold war to clear the name of authoritarian communism so we could try that, but too many of the old guard who enjoyed our run with fascism are still in power. So we're stuck in a big jumbled mess, and while we sort it out, we're sticking with our traditional middle east policy: "We're going to keep killing you until you stop hating us; unless you're Israel, in which case we will heartily praise whatever you do, with no reservations".
