First and Last

2002

This class was going to be a joke, Casey thought, as he noted the absence of desks and the bean bag chairs and pillows strewn about the room in their place. But, he decided, it could be worse. Thanks to his grandmother’s tutelage, he had an adequate knowledge of contemporary authors, and he had already read most of the books listed on the class syllabus. The teacher, Miss Wells, wasn’t bad to look at either, he decided as he watched her fussing around with lamps and colored scarves, creating “mood” lighting.

Casey turned as the classroom door opened, surprised to see Veronica Mars walk in. He had a sudden flashback to a night long ago. Wow. He hadn’t thought back to those ten minutes in a long time; the rest of the night’s activities had always overshadowed them in his mind. But now the memory came flooding back and he could almost taste her strawberry lipgloss.

Other than casual greetings when passing in the halls, he hadn’t really spoken to Veronica since that night. For the first time, Casey thought to wonder why.

“Hi, Casey.” Her voice was timid, but she met his eyes directly.

“Veronica.” He nodded, feeling a genuine smile spread across his face; so different from the sardonic grin he usually wore in social circles. “It’s been a while. How’ve you been?”

“Good.” Her expression was more confident now, reminding him again of that girl he’d glimpsed in the closet. “Really good.”

Before Casey could respond her attention was drawn from him. His smile slipped as Duncan plopped down next to Veronica, wrapping an arm around her shoulders in an unmistakably possessive gesture.

“Hey, Casey.” Duncan greeted him before brushing a quick kiss across Veronica’s cheek. She smiled, blushing slightly, and Casey looked away uncomfortably.

“’Sup, Duncan,” Casey tilted his head, acknowledging the younger man.

Casey slumped back in his beanbag chair, even less enthused by the prospect of sticking out an entire semester in this trippy atmosphere. A shadow fell across him and he looked up to find a cute brunette smiling down at him.

“Is this seat taken?” She nodded to a vacant pillow next to him.

“Be my guest.” Casey felt the grin spread across his face. Perhaps this class wasn’t going to be so bad after all…
