Wands and Wizards

I don't know what's with me ... I seem to have fallen back into the deep, deep hole that is Harry Potter.

Maybe it has something to do with the imminence of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and, especially, The Cursed Child but I keep having THOUGHTS. Anyway here is the official synopsis of CC:

It was always difficult being Harry Potter ( Read more... )

All the HP stuff means I never seem to evade that black hole. "I'm over Harry Potter now - ooh, shiny!" :P

I actually like the idea that it's the Elder Wand! Also, I know people are worried the play is going to debunk the "all is well" ending, but I don't think it will. Compared to Voldemort trying to kill him 24/7 when he was a teenager, all is well. That doesn't mean there won't be bad days.

I'm not really sure it's official canon though, because it seems JKR isn't writing it as much as green-lighting it. It'll also be interesting to see how fandom shifts with the play, as not everyone's going to get a chance to see it, at least not at the same time, unless they do an official recording or something.

She says it is:

I suspect her involvement is more than green lighting and less than writing.

Oh! The info I had implied that the guy basically said "I'm going to write this" and JKR basically... approved the storyline but didn't really have much more to do with it than that. I should probably start following the HP sites again if I want to have opinions. ;) I do have her on twitter, but I only check twitter once in a blue tweet... you're probably right, she's not writing it per se but definitely very, very involved.

And good to know that it'll be canon, I was confused there. Although now I'm even more curious about how the fandom will deal with that, since like I said, I'm not sure everyone will be able to access it the way they generally could access the books. Then again, fandom - at least on LJ - doesn't seem as concerned with canon anymore anyway. From where I'm standing, the general consensus seems to be "ugh JKR go away I don't want to find out my Voldemort/Harry/Hermione threesome trilogy isn't canon." (You... thought it was before?)

... wow, Angua, you're bringing 2005!me out of the woodwork.

Since I have never really been involved in fic and other of that type of fanon, following her mostly *is* my fandom these days! LOL

I'm even more curious about how the fandom will deal with that

There has been a good bit of wank so far about how only the most privileged will be able to enjoy it as intended and spoilers will be impossible to avoid and the like. I'm sympathetic but it's definitely a first-world-problem kind of thing IMO. The truly underprivileged have always had to wait for the books from libraries, etc.

The Elder Wand didn't occur to me but that doesn't mean it isn't super-obvious. I can't say I had put much thought before now into *what* the source of the darkness would be but it makes perfect sense.

On the other hand, the fact that the story is said to be a natural fit for a play format doesn't argue for much adventure, especially not a traveling quest type. When I think play, I think talk and family drama and things like that.

I'm thinking two main settings: somewhere in Hogwarts and Harry's auror office at the Ministry of Magic. And, of course, Harry did re-bury the Elder Wand on Hogwarts grounds. Or, at least, he said he would.

I have now reminded myself that the Resurrection Stone is ALSO at Hogwarts, abandoned by Harry in a random place in the Forbidden Forest.

And, presumably, Harry has followed through on his plan to pass his Invisibility Cloak on to one of his children, which would mean it is also at Hogwarts--all three Hallows!

Though, I suppose, he might not have passed it on YET. He could need it for his job, or he might think James and/or Al aren't old enough yet.

I'd like to think he is saving it for Lily. :)
